Amritsar: The Amritsar Central jail authorities have confiscated eight mobile phones along with 87 packets of cigarettes and three packets of tobacco during checking on Monday. In four separate cases, the police booked six prisoners in this regard. Among those booked were identified as Vinod Kumar of Kot Khalsa, Sharif Mohammad of Dhianpur, Yodhvir Singh of Ranike, Manpreet Singh of Tarn Taran Road, Gurbaksh Singh of Ghanupur Kale and Vir Singh of Sathiala. The jail staff recovered one mobile phone each of them. Two mobiles, cigarettes and tobacco were found abandoned which were apparently thrown out of the jail complex. TNS

Two nabbed with pistol, bullets

Amritsar: The anti-gangster staff of the Amritsar city police arrested two persons identified as Jobanpreet Singh of Mahal village and Sahib Singh of Sharifpura here on Monday. The police recovered a country-made pistol, a magazine and four bullets from their possession. A case under the Arms Act was registered against them. They were produced in the court and brought on police remand for further interrogation. The police are verifying their antecedents and source of weapon. TNS

Gang of vehicle thieves busted

Tarn Taran: The Sarhali police busted a five-member gang of vehicle thieves from Naushehra Pannuan village on Monday. Four of the gang members have been arrested with four stolen motorcycles. One of the gang members absconded from the spot. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gajjan Singh, Investigation Officer (IO), said the arrested gang members were Komaljit Singh of Dhotian, Paramjit Singh Prabh of Dugri, Gulshan Singh of Kot Ise Khan and Angrej Singh of Kotkapura. Sikandar Singh of Nihalgarh absconded from the spot. Police officer Gajjan Singh said the accused used to steal vehicles from busy areas like religious places and sell those to innocent people at low prices. A case under Sections 379 and 411 of the IPC was registered against the gang. The arrested were produced in the court on Tuesday that sent them to two-day police remand.
