Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney has entered into a special agreement with Amritsar NGO Phulkari-Woman of Amritsar (WOA) for multifaceted development of the district. The purpose is to create a better coordination between the Phulkari members and the district administration to promote educational, health, cultural and environmental initiatives between Phulkari and the District Collector’s office, which will contribute to the overall development of Amritsar.

The DC, while inaugurating a two-day Phulkari bazaar, signed the MoU, under the agreement of which, opportunities will be created to provide vocational training programmes for vulnerable women and youth. This will include skill-building workshops in handicrafts, starting your own business, digital literacy and other areas. Such programmes will be conducted jointly by government departments and the NGO.

The NGO has already been supporting several projects helmed by its members in the field of digital literacy, cervical cancer awareness and eradication and supporting small scale women led business.

Sheetal Sohal, president, Phulkari, shared, “Besides, scholarships for girls from the low-income families, guidance in career planning for their future and higher education opportunities will be created. Joint establishment of libraries and digital learning in government schools, leadership programme s for women, organising free or subsidised cervical cancer screening camps in rural and urban areas, health awareness campaign, ensuring recycling for environmental sustainability and eco-friendly habits are all part of the agreement.”

In addition, they will work together on policy reforms and initiatives focused on gender equality, women’s rights, health, city planning, urban development and education. The NGO will also serve as consultants and visiting faculty for government schools and colleges.
