City lad Abhishek picked for T20 series against Bangladesh

The holy city is known for producing sports persons of calibre. The performance of hockey players from Amritsar in the Olympics bears testimony to this. Now, another youth has brought laurels to the city with his selection as an opener in the T20 team for the Bangladesh series. This comes two months after 24-year-old Abhishek Sharma made his international debut in a T20 cricket match in Zimbabwe. A wave of happiness has descended among cricket fans and Abhishek’s family members with his selection.

Considered a hard-hitting lower-order batsman who also chips in as a left-arm spinner, he guided India to victory in the U-19 Asia Cup in 2016 and has a World Cup to his name as an U-19 cricketer. As a young cricket star, he was part of the Indian squad for the ICC World Cup.

He came into limelight with a century while making his U-19 debut for Punjab in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. He had already shared his dream with the media — to make it to the senior squad — for which he has been taking giant strides.

He was trained by his childhood idol Yuvraj Singh whom he saw batting on screen while growing up and adored his style. Earlier in 2022, he was picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad at a record price of Rs 6.50 crore.

Member of Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla congratulated Abhishek Sharma on his selection as an opener in the Indian team stating that such youths were a source of inspiration for everyone. Aujla said that Abhishek Sharma’s elevation has not only made the city proud but also made the whole country take notice of him. He said that when children from the city of Golden Temple shine, they become a source of inspiration for others. In IPL 2024, Abhishek achieved his position through excellent performance and has been one of the most impressive young players this season, the MP added.
