Citizens Forum holds candlelight march to highlight women’s safety
Amritsar, August 31
Members of various democratic and progressive organisations under the banner of Citizens Forum Amritsar organised a candlelight march near Bhandari bridge, protesting against the gruesome rape and murder of a young doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.
A large number of citizens and leaders of various organisations attended the protest meeting. They stated that the horrible incident has shaken the spirit of every Indian and sent shockwaves across the country, leading to nationwide anger and protest against the inhumane and heinous crime.
This incident has also exposed the very nature and structure of governance and the safety of doctors in our country, stated Citizens Forum in a press release. "It seems that nothing has changed since the Nirbhaya case in 2012. Rather, safety and security of vulnerable sections, particularly young women, has become worse," said Rattan Singh Randhawa, a veteran farmer leader.
Such incidents are black spots on the fair name of liberty and dignity of young women and other vulnerable sections in the country, said Prof Parminder Singh. The event witnessed participation of several intellectuals such as Prof Amarjit Singh Sidhu, Prof SS Dhillon, Prof SS Sohal, Advocate Navjit Singh, Kamaljit Kaur, Advocate Kawaljit Kaur and many other prominent leaders of farmers, employees and workers associations.
They strongly condemned this barbaric and ghastly crime and demanded the strongest possible punishment to the culprits. They also took note of the lathi charge against the protesting doctors in West Bengal and also supported their demand for their safety in and outside the workplace.
The prominent leaders of different organisations such as Narinder Kumar, Balkar Singh Dudhala, Jagtar Singh, Ratan Singh Randhawa, Charanjit Singh, Saroj Kumari, Vinay Kumar, Balbir Lakha, Amrik Singh and others were present at the march.
