Amritsar: The three-day ‘D’ Zone Zonal Yuvak Mela of Guru Nanak Dev University Colleges concluded on October 30. Encapsulating its memorable moments, the winners of this youth fair were the Sikh National College, Banga, with the Overall Championship D Zone ‘A’ Division title and Hindu Girls College, Kapurthala, winning the Overall ‘B’ Division Championship. ‘B’ division first runners-up were Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Sultanpur Lodhi, and the second runners-up were Lyallpur Khalsa College, Kapurthala and Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara. Addressing the prize distribution ceremony, chief guest Preet Mohinder Singh Bedi said that these youth fairs serve to energise the youth. Dean Students Welfare Prof Preet Mohinder Singh Bedi and in-charge of Youth Welfare Department, Dr Amandeep Singh, presented trophies to the students of the winning colleges and congratulated the winners.

Diwali exhibition at Khalsa College

Amritsar: A two-day Diwali exhibition was held at Khalsa College. The exhibition was organised by the Fashion Designing Department of Khalsa College and concluded on October 30. Acting principal of the college, Dr AK Kahlon said the exhibition was based on the theme ‘The Enlightening Diaz-2024’. The students displayed their skills and presented different types of hand-made items. Different types of festive items prepared by the students, including lamps, sheets, Diwali accessories, saris, dupattas, cosmetic items, nail art, mehndi and rangoli were appreciated by chief guest Tejinder Kaur Chhina.

Foundation Day celebrated

Amritsar: The 122nd foundation day of the Chief Khalsa Diwan, the foremost organisation of Sikhs, was held at Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib at Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary School. Secretary of Chief Khalsa Diwan, Savinder Singh Kathunangal, congratulated the institution on its Foundation Day and spoke about the 122-year-old history of the Diwan, the difficult circumstances of the founding period, the objectives of the founders, dreams and achievements of the Diwan. He said that the CKD runs 50 institutions, including schools, old age homes, hospitals, orphanages, free charitable schools and other public welfare institutions. “Free books and uniforms are also being given along with education in the three Adarsh schools handed over by the government to the Chief Khalsa Diwan. In order to raise the level of education in Diwan schools, under the continuous initiatives taken by the Directorate of Education, teacher training programmes are being conducted for the teachers to keep up with the changing times and to learn, teach and think something new,” he said. Along with this, Nirgunyara Patra and Khalsa Advocate running under the Khalsa Tract Society established in 1894 by Bhai Vir Singh, the founder of Diwan, are being published.

‘Star Reader’ appreciation for Kum Kum

Amritsar: To make the students knowledgeable, DAV College, Amritsar has initiated a ‘Star Reader’ award for the students. This appreciation is given to the students who spend maximum quality time in the college library. The practice has proved fruitful as it has raised and improved the reading habit of the students, informed Principal Dr Amardeep Gupta. Kum Kum Sharma of B.Sc (Non-medical) Semester 5, has been awarded ‘Star Reader of Library’ for the month of August. There are various norms to become a star reader which include the behaviour of the student in the library, the availing of library facilities and his constant reading habit. The award consists of appreciation certificate and a book.
