Campus notes: Amritsar’s Football Team Wins Silver
Amritsar’s football team earned the silver medal at the third edition of the Khedan Watan Punjab Diya, organised by the state government to combat the growing drug epidemic and connect youth with sports. The football competition took place in Mahilpur, Hoshiarpur, where Amritsar’s team secured second place after losing by just one goal to the Jalandhar team. District Football Association Amritsar president, Sukhchain Singh Aulakh; Assistant Commissioner of Taxes and Excise (retd), Amritpal Singh Mahna; and District Football Coach Daljit Singh congratulated the team on their performance.
National Entrepreneurship Day
Amritsar: To mark National Entrepreneurship Day, the Institutions Innovation Council at DAV College hosted a ‘Business Idea Competition’. The event aimed to honour and promote the spirit of entrepreneurship among students while also recognising the contributions of entrepreneurs to the nation’s economic development. The principal, Dr Amardeep Gupta, discussed the importance of innovation, business skills and marketing, encouraging students to explore various incubation centres and funding agencies. Seven students presented unique business ideas, including an online platform for nail art products, a coffee franchise offering freshly baked flavoured coffees, a gaming zone for both online gaming and game development, a mobile app connecting workers with employers and a healthy tiffin service for students living away from home.
Sukhmani Science Exhibition
Batala: Woodstock Public School recently hosted the “Incredible Sukhmani Science Exhibition,” which showcased student innovation in science. The exhibition was guided by school management leaders Dr Satnam Singh Nijjar (chairman) and Dr Satinderjit Kaur Nijjar (chairperson). Distinguished guests, including Pavitra Singh Nijjar, Dr Ranbir Singh Gill and Swarna Gill, attended the event. Students presented a variety of working and non-working models, explaining complex scientific principles in an engaging way. The event concluded with the distribution of awards, trophies and certificates to students for their outstanding contributions.
Skill to Entrepreneurship Workshop
Amritsar: BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar, participated in an online workshop titled “Skill to Entrepreneurship,” part of the State/District Best Action Research Institution Award 2024-25. Dr Deepika Bakshi, Director of the National EduTrust of India, was the workshop’s resource person. She emphasised key entrepreneurship skills such as leadership, creative thinking, business management, and problem-solving. Dr Bakshi also highlighted the role of entrepreneurship in driving economic growth and creating new job opportunities. An interactive session followed, where participants learnt about an upcoming Instagram Reel Challenge to promote innovative stalls. Principal Dr Pushpinder Walia underscored the college’s commitment to equipping future leaders with the necessary entrepreneurial skills and knowledge.
Debate on Women’s Safety and Laws
Amritsar: The Oratory Club at Khalsa College of Law (KCL) organised a debate competition on the topic, “Concerns Regarding the Safety of Women in India with Special Reference to Women-Centric Laws.” Sixteen teams participated, presenting arguments on the challenges surrounding women’s safety despite existing laws. Participants called for more gender-neutral laws and a societal balance. The best speakers included Onkar Singh (BALL.B 3rd Sem), Shivangi Bhatia (BALL.B 5th Sem), and Tanishka (BALL.B 7th Sem). Tanishka and Medha Sharma (BALL.B 7th Sem), Tania and Palak (BALL.B 9th Sem), and Shinepreet Kaur and Ravneet Kaur won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions, respectively. Prof (Dr) Jaspal Singh and Dr Gunisha Saluja commended the students for their insightful contributions and encouraged continued participation to enhance their overall personalities.
Inter-DPS basketball girls’ tourney
Jalandhar: Delhi Public School hosted the Inter-DPS Basketball Girls (Open) Tournament on November 7 and 8, with six teams participating from Jhakri, Greater Faridabad, Patiala, Abohar, Sangrur, and the host school in Jalandhar. The tournament began with an opening ceremony attended by Col Vinod Joshi, Commanding Officer of the 2 Punjab Battalion of the NCC. The inaugural match was between DPS Jalandhar and DPS Patiala, with DPS Jalandhar emerging victorious, winning 36-3. DPS Jalandhar ultimately claimed the trophy, with DPS Abohar taking 1st Runner-Up and DPS Jhakri securing 2nd Runner-Up. Harleen Grewal was named the Best Player, and Aishwarya Rathour won the Shooter of the Tournament award. Principal Ritu Kaul delivered an inspiring address, congratulating the teams for their spirited performances.
Inter-school sahodaya origami
Jalandhar: Mayor World School hosted an inspiring Inter-School Sahodaya Origami Competition themed ‘Panch Tattva: Shaping Nature’s Five Elements’. The event saw participation from 31 prestigious schools, where students crafted intricate origami designs based on the five elements of nature. The team from State Public School, comprising Sukhdeep Kaur and Diya Garg, claimed first place. Police DAV Public School secured second place, while Swami Sant Das Public School finished in third. The event was organized by Sharanjit Kaur, whose efforts were highly appreciated.
Big barnyard adventure
Jalandhar: Innocent Hearts, Loharan hosted ‘The Big Barnyard - The Field Adventure’, a theme-based event that aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action). Students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 had the opportunity to connect with nature through immersive activities. Parents also joined their children in the adventure. The event featured a mini-farm made from repurposed waste, showcasing creative waste management and sustainable practices. The farm included hay bales, tractors, and farm animals. Guests enjoyed petting zoos, pony rides, and farm-themed games. The festive atmosphere was enhanced by live music, food stalls, and a photo booth with farm-themed props. Dr. Palak Gupta Bowry, Director of CSR, emphasized, “This unique event connects children with rural charm, encouraging them to appreciate sustainable living.”
