Notorious gangster-turned cross-border smuggler Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Jatt, has been booked on charges of extortion by the police. He allegedly had demanded extortion from a local trader in Rayya. The victim, Heera Lal, had lodged a complaint with the Jandiala Guru police that he owned a utensils’ shop at Rayya. He said four days ago, he got a call from a virtual number in which the caller identified himself as Happy Jatt and demanded money. He said he threatened to kill him or his family in case he failed to give him extortion. Sub-Inspector Dhanwinder Singh said the police have registered a case under Section 308 (4) (extortion) against Happy Jatt following the complaint by the victim. The accused did not specify the amount, but was threatening the victim over phone through voice messages. Jatt has over 20 criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, robbery, the Arms Act and the NDPS Act registered against him in Tarn Taran and Amritsar (Rural). He is also wanted by the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC). He allegedly fled to a foreign country after forging documents.

Man ends life, wife booked

Tarn Taran: A local resident who was perturbed over differences with his wife committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance here. The deceased has been identified as Satnam Singh (35) of the local Master Colony. Satnam Singh, along with his wife Gurmit Kaur, was attending a wedding at the nearby Kakka Kandiala marriage palace on Monday. Both had a verbal duel while attending the wedding. In a fit of rage, Satnam Singh consumed some poisonous substance kept in his pocket. Gurdeep Singh, his relative who was present on the occasion, tried to take out the poisonous substance from his mouth, but he swallowed it immediately. His wife Gurmit Kaur and Gurdeep Singh brought him to the local Civil Hospital for treatment where the doctors advised his family to bring him to the PGI in Chandigarh but they admitted him to a local private hospital. He breathed his last on Tuesday at the hospital. ASI Rachhpal Singh from the local city police said that Gurmit Kaur, wife of the deceased, has been booked under Section 108 of the BNS. She is, however, absconding.

Gangster’s aides fire at house

Tarn Taran: Armed men of foreign based gangster Prabh Dasuwal fired at the gate of the residence of Balbir Singh, a resident of Valtoha, on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Balbir Singh in his complaint to the Valtoha police said that the gangster Prabh Dasuwal in his mobile call to him on November 6 demanded a ransom of Rs 30 Lakh and he again contacted for ransom. He said that his two to three armed men fired at the gate of his residence on last night and managed to escape from the spot. Valtoha ASI Avtar Singh said that a case under section 109, 308 (4), 111 (4), 125 of the BNS and 25 of the arms act against Prabh Dasuwal and his two armed unidentified persons.

Man wins 2 golds in athletics c’ship

Jalandhar: Advocate Manmohan Singh (61), a former railway complaints inspector, recently won two gold medals in State Master Athletics Championship held recently in Chandigarh. He won medals in the 200m and 400m race. Manmohan Singh is a former captain of Punjab kho-kho team and has remained a national-level athlete. President, District Bar Association, Aditya Jain and secretary Tajinder Singh Dhaliwal congratulated Manmohan Singh.
