The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Ugrahan) continued its dharna at Nijjerpura toll plaza near Mannawala for the 12th day on Monday. Following a call given by the state body, the BKU Ugrahan made three toll plazas free in the district to press for the acceptance of their demands. The protesters demanded from the government that paddy procurement process be made smooth at grain markets across the district.

“The Central and Punjab governments have both failed the farmers. Anti-farmer policies of these governments have forced the farmers to hold protests during the harvesting season,” said Parminder Singh Pandori, union leader.

The union has eight key demands, including proper paddy purchase and DAP availability for the cultivation of wheat crop. “At the time of harvesting paddy and sowing wheat, the farmers are protesting to sell crops and struggling to buy fertilisers. It is sad that the government is not buying their produce and they have to struggle to buy the fertilisers,” Pandori added.
