Member Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla on Tuesday met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and raised concern over the rising cases of drug smuggling through drones at the Wagah border. During the meeting, he apprised him of the situation of the border, besides demanding to implement anti-drone system as soon as possible and giving a special package.

MP Aujla said the situation on the India-Pakistan border adjoining Amritsar is very disgusting. Being a border district, Amritsar is facing serious challenges due to the continuous influx of drugs and ammunition through various means including drones. Despite the extraordinary efforts and bravery of the border forces, the increasing use of high-tech methods by smugglers has made it difficult to completely curb these activities. The districts connected to Amritsar are also affected by these smuggling activities.

He said that drug trafficking is having a devastating effect on the youth of Punjab, leading many to fall prey to drug addiction and ruining families. Additionally, illegal supply of arms and ammunition has become a serious threat to national security. This activity increases manifold, taking advantage of night time, especially fog.

MP Aujla said that our forces need latest technology and advanced systems to effectively counter these challenges. In particular, there is an urgent need for anti-drone technology and surveillance systems to intercept and neutralise drones used for smuggling and to upgrade equipment. He urged for immediate steps to control drug trafficking and arms smuggling in this sensitive area and to immediately provide a special package to strengthen border security in Amritsar.

He said that to resolve this, deployment of ultra-advanced anti-drone systems to cover the areas, provision of high-tech surveillance and monitoring equipment with more night lights, special package for training and capacity building of border forces, latest technology equipment to keep proper surveillance of an area of about 30.7 km is very much needed.
