With just two days left for Diwali, people were seen flocking to the markets in large numbers for festive shopping, causing a surge of vehicles on roads resulting in long traffic jams in several parts of the city. Besides, pedestrians were worst sufferers as they found little space to walk on the footpath.

Even the police did not create special designated parking sites to avoid haphazard parking on the roads. People were seen parking their vehicles at any place available. Commuters took to social media platforms to inform about traffic congestion at various points in the city. A commuter said there was a massive traffic jam on the GT road outside Khalsa College, Guru Ram Das Dental College and Nexus Mall.

Another commuter complained about a traffic jam outside the Hall Gate, at telephone Exchange Chowk, Katra Jai Mal Singh, Shastri market and other places.

Jugal Kishore Chabbra, a city resident, said there was excitement and frenzy among people visiting the marketplaces in cars. This resulted in a cacophony of horns on roads. All these activities made the roads scary. The holy city experienced significant traffic disruptions as crowds of people thronged markets ahead of Diwali, causing inconvenience to commuters.
