65-yr-old man crushed under speeding MC truck
A 65-year-old man Om Prakash lost his life in an accident on Kapurthala Road near Sports College here this morning. The incident was been captured in the footage of the CCTV cameras installed nearby.
Om Prakash of Raj Nagar at Basti Bawa Khel was riding his scooter when he was struck from behind by a speeding Municipal Corporation tipper truck. The collision proved fatal, with Om succumbing to his injuries on the spot.
The police, meanwhile, arrived nearly 40 minutes late at the spot due to jurisdictional issues between two police stations - Basti Bawa Khel and Division Number 2. In the meantime, the passersby gathered at the scene and searched the victim’s mobile to inform his family members about the incident.
Later, the police of Division Number 2 reached the scene and took the body into their custody. The police also seized the MC truck and Om’s Activa (PB-08-CR-8269).
Victim’s brother Ved Prakash said Om ran a grocery shop at Basti Bawa Khel and left home to purchase supplies from the nearby market. He received a call about the accident around 11:30 am and rushed to the scene, only to learn of his brother’s demise.
He said Om is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
SHO Gurpreet Singh of Police Division Number-2 confirmed that the truck driver fled the scene. Investigations are underway, with the police reviewing CCTV footage to ascertain fault. He said an FIR under the relevant sections of the BNS has been registered against the unknown driver.
“Once the post-mortem formalities are completed, we will seek details of the truck from the Municipal Corporation. Besides, the hunt to locate the accused driver is underway, and police teams have been working on it”, he added.
Meanwhile, local residents have raised concerns over reckless driving of heavy vehicles in the city and demanded stricter road safety measures.
