Tarn Taran, January 12
Four occupants of a car were killed and one was injured in a road accident that occurred on the bridge on the Beas river at Harike Pattan village on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. The car rammed the rear of a stationary truck, which had come to a halt after hitting another truck some time ago.
The deceased have been identified as Karanjit Singh, Robinjit Singh, Jasbir Singh and Gurmej Singh, all in the 20-22 age group. They were returning after paying obeisance at Darbar Sahib in Amritsar.
The car driver, Balwinder Singh, had a narrow escape and was under treatment at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. He was in a stable condition. As soon as the information of the accident reached the Harike police, SHO Inspector Kewal Singh along with a team of cops reached the spot and with the help of residents of nearby areas, they initiated a rescue operation.
The cops faced great difficulty while conducting the rescue operation as there was a jam-like situation as two trucks had collided on the spot some time ago. Moreover, visibility was low due to dense fog alongside the Beas river.
The SHO said the families of the deceased were informed who reached the spot. The SHO said one victim died on the spot, another succumbed to his injuries in the Civil Hospital, Patti, third one died at the Civil Hospital, Tarn Taran, and the fourth at the Community Health Centre at Sarhali.
The car occupants were on their way back home when their car hit a stationary truck on the Harike bridge due to dense fog. Inspector Kewal Singh, SHO, Harike, said he along with a team of police personnel reached the spot on receiving the information.
The SHO said the families of the deceased persons preferred not to lodge a police complaint against anybody. On the statement of Daljnder Singh, the police had lodged a report under Section 174 of the CrPC. He said the car was being driven rashly and it was badly damaged in the road accident.
The truck was not removed from the national highway and the car driver, though took all precautionary measures like he had kept the dippers on, failed to see the truck. The SHO said the condition of Balwinder Singh was stable. He was referred from the Civil Hospital to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar.
