Amritsar, July 13

The doctors at the Cardiology Department of Government Medical College here has given a new lease of life to a 13-year-old suffering from a rare congenital disorder, right pulmonary artery to left atrium fisula.

The disorder, first identified in 1950 in the US, has only been reported in 100 patients across the globe, stated head of the cardiology team Dr Parminder Singh while sharing details here on Saturday.

Dr Parminder Singh said the girl from Budha Khuh was brought to the hospital where it was discovered that she had a hole in her heart. “As a result, a vein came out of his pulmonary artery and went to the left side of the heart, due to which the dirty blood in his heart was mixing with the oxygenated good blood,” he explained.

Owing to the lack of oxygen supply in the body parts, not only her physical growth had been restricted but her skin had also turned blue.

Dr Parminder Singh said for the treatment of the disease, a major bypass surgery is required, but their team of doctors — Dr Pankaj Sarangal, Dr Nishan Singh, Dr Soumia, Dr Tejbir Singh and others — fixed a PDA device using angiography.

“The result was astonishing as the colour of the sink started to turn normal even before the procedure was complete,” he said, adding that due to Ayushman Bharat Health Scheme, the family could avail the life-saving treatment without paying any cost. — TNS

Started at GMC in October 2021, the cath lab is proving to be a boon for poor patients who cannot afford costly heart-related treatment from private hospitals. Dr Singh said till date they have performed 2,086 surgeries in the last three years.
