Amritsar MC gets nod to set waste-to-energy plant at Bhagtanwala garbage dump
Amritsar, April 12
The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has given the nod for the waste-to-energy plant, where electricity would be produced from garbage.
The energy plant would be set up at the dumping ground site in Bhagtanwala.
Municipal Corporation officials claimed that the government would spend Rs287 crore on the project and it is being expected that the work would be initiated within the next few months. The detailed project report has been sent to the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC), which would further set the price of power with the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA).
The government had proposed the plant in 2016 and the bioremediation of garbage was under process to remove the garbage to clear the ground for the plant. Area residents were worried about the processing of garbage following health concerns in the adjoining areas. The Punjab Pollution Control Board will keep a regular check on the project and assured recommended height of chimneys and air filters.
Municipal Corporation (MC) officials claimed that the residents of nearby localities would get a major relief after the plant gets functional. The MC had hired a solid waste management company AVERDA for the bioremediation and processing of garbage. The company claimed to have processed 3 lakh metric tonne garbage out of 10 lakh MT garbage lying on the Bhagtanwala ground till date. Now, the company claimed that they have vacated 4 acres for the installation of the waste-to-energy plant. The company would also develop a green belt around the dumping ground. MC officials claimed that the project would be completed within two years.
According to the information, the waste-to-energy plant would consume 1,000 MT garbage daily and produce 10 mW power from it. The city produces around 400 MT garbage daily.
The civic body is paying Rs1,325 per MT to the private firm to collect the garbage door to door and Rs375 per tonne for the bioremediation process.
MC Commissioner Sandip Rishi said work on the plant would be completed on time.
