Always worked within constitutional limits: PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he had, in his current capacity, always functioned within the remit of the Constitution and never tried to encroach upon the jurisdiction of others.
The PM was speaking in the presence of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and other senior judges during the Constitution Day celebrations at the Supreme Court of India.
As he wrapped up his address, the PM recalled the speech which India’s first President Rajendra Prasad made to the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, the day the Constitution was adopted.
Quoting the late President, Modi said, “India today needs nothing more than a set of few honest people who can keep national interests above personal interests. The sense of nation first sentiment will keep the spirit of the Constitution alive forever.”
Just before he wound up, the PM, on a lighter note, added, “And as far as I go, the work that the Constitution has given me, I have tried to execute it staying within the limits of the Constitution. I have not tried to encroach. I have honoured my limits... I know where I stand, one has to just signal, not say much.”
Earlier in his remarks, the PM said the Indian Constitution was not merely a book of law. “It is a continuous, ever-flowing, living stream. Our Constitution is the guide to our past, present and future,” he said, adding that every citizen of the country today has one goal — building a developed India.
