An awareness rally to commemorate World AIDS Day was organised by the Red Ribbon Club at DAV College here on Saturday.

Principal of the college, Rajesh Kumar Mahajan, said AIDS disease was caused by HIV virus, which weakened the immunity of humans. The purpose behind celebrating the special day was to make people aware of the disease, he said. There was a need to remove the misconceptions spread in society, and volunteers should also come forward to create awareness for it, he added. He further said under the theme ‘Take the right path: My health, my right!’, the World Health Organisation was calling on global leaders and citizens to champion the right to health by addressing the inequalities that hindered progress in ending AIDS.

Dr Tarsem Sharma, coordinator of the Red Ribbon Club, said banners were put up at various places in the college campus to make students aware of it. The club had always been making students aware of the contemporary and sensitive issues and would continue to discharge its responsibilities in the coming times as well, he added. — OC
