With the first week of the Parliament’s winter session getting ‘washed out’ as both Houses were again adjourned on Friday, parties of the INDIA bloc have urged the Congress for a change in its strategy for the next week.

They have suggested that the forthcoming discussion on the Constitution in Rajya Sabha be used to highlight issues of Gautam Adani’s indictment, and violence in UP’s Sambhal and Manipur.

Sources said after the Trinamool Congress, the Left front has asked the Congress to change its strategy in the Parliament. Earlier, the TMC had indicated to the Congress that it wants to highlight people-centric issues like strife in Manipur and Sambhal and inflation rather than solely focussing on the Adani issue.

Rather than disrupting the proceedings, the ensuing discussion on Constitution can be used to highlight issues plaguing the nation, the Left front is said to have conveyed to the Congress leadership.

In the Rajya Sabha, a discussion on the Constitution is likely to be held on December 2 and 3. Though there is no clarity on whether a similar discussion will be held in Lok Sabha, sources said it could not be ruled out as even the BJP was keen on reining in the Opposition’s blitzkrieg over Adani and other issues.

The Opposition is likely to refer to the principles enshrined in the Constitution to highlight the alleged Adani bribery scandal, Manipur and Sambhal violence, while other constituents like the TMC and Left are likely to follow suit.

Now with the proposed change in strategy, there is likely to be greater cohesion among the INDIA bloc parties on voicing their concern over the aforementioned issues.

The government had tried to buy peace by acceding to the Opposition’s demand of extending the tenure of the panel on Waqf Amendment Bill and allowing a discussion on the Constitution in Rajya Sabha. However, the proceedings in both Houses were again washed out on Friday. The Lok Sabha only functioned for 20 minutes, while Rajya Sabha ran for 15, before being adjourned for the day.
