Buoyed by its victory in the October 5 Assembly polls, the BJP is gearing up for another electoral battle — the elections to the seven municipal corporations (MCs) in the state.

With election to the MCs of Yamunanagar, Rohtak, Hisar, Gurugram, Karnal, Panipat and Faridabad ‘long overdue’, the saffron party has got into the election mode with the State Election Commission (SEC) set to announce the election schedule soon. The election to the newly-created Municipal Corporation of Manesar is also likely to be held along with these civic bodies.

Sources said the BJP was keen to have early elections since it would be able to maintain the momentum of the Assembly win. As a majority of the urban voters have voted for the saffron party in the recent Assembly polls, it will be advantage BJP in the upcoming MC polls, the sources asserted.

The BJP candidates had won the elections for the post of mayor for all seven MCs in the elections held in 2017-18. While the five-year tenure of these corporations ended a few months back, the elections could not be held for a variety of reasons.

As the state was plunged into Lok Sabha and Assembly elections this year, the elections could not be held on time. Besides, certain other issues like updation of voters’ list and delay in the demarcation of the wards, especially in Manesar, also delayed the elections.

It is learnt that now the MC polls are set to be held early next year. In fact, certain ground work in this regard had already been done, a senior officer said, adding that modalities for the announcement of the MC polls would be worked out soon.

After the formation of the Nayab Singh Saini Government in Haryana, the BJP has already set the process to enroll around 50 lakh members in motion. Along with the membership drive, the party had already made the preparations for the MC polls.

“The BJP always works on the mission mode. After registering its historic hat-trick in Haryana, we are ready for the MC polls whenever they are announced by the State Election Commission. We have already stated preparations for the polls,” claimed BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli.
