Advisory for tourists visiting snowbound, hilly areas
In the wake of fresh snowfall in higher reaches of the state, Himachal Pradesh police has issued an advisory for tourists and commuters visiting snowbound areas and hilly terrains in the state. Police has advised the commuters to avoid venturing to snow prone areas as well as to closed or restricted routes as this may pose significant risks.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Traffic Tourism and Railways (TTR) Narvir Rathour said that as winter approaches, the Himachal Pradesh Police urges all tourists, travellers and commuters planning to visit the state's tribal areas, snowbound regions and hilly terrains to prioritise their safety.
People have also been advised to regularly check weather forecasts and road condition on official government or police websites to avoid getting caught during heavy snowfall or adverse weather. They have been further cautioned to drive slowly and cautiously on icy or snow-covered roads, to maintain adequate distance from other vehicles and avoid sudden braking or acceleration. They should use low gears when driving downhill to prevent skidding.
Motorists have been advised to equip their vehicle with anti-skid tyres, snow chains and ensure that the brakes are functioning properly. They have been told to check battery health, fuel levels and coolant systems to avoid breakdowns in remote areas. Besides, they should carry a spare tyre,
Furthermore, commuters have also been advised to carry warm clothing, blankets, food and drinking water, first-aid kit, torches with extra batteries and fully charged mobile phones with power banks.
Additionally, people have also been advised to follow instructions from local authorities and police personnel and consider hiring certified guides or drivers familiar with the terrain. Apart from this, tourists have been urged to ensure that they have necessary permits for restricted or tribal areas.
Tourists have also been advised to register with local police stations or tourism offices in remote areas for safety monitoring and keep emergency contact numbers like 112 for police assistance with them, besides confirming accommodations in advance to avoid last-minute inconvenience.
Furthermore, police has also appealed to the tourists as well as locals to avoiding littering in open areas and to adhere to the principles of responsible tourism to help preserve Himachal Pradesh''s natural beauty.
