Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested an absconding drug peddler. Station House Officer (SHO) Aman Saini said the suspect had been identified as Baljinder Singh, alias Jashan, a resident of Talwandi Butian village. The police got a tip-off that the suspect had illegal firearms and was selling heroin. The SHO said a case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against the suspect. He would be produced in the court to seek his police remand. His three accomplices are still absconding. OC

Six booked on assault charge

Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have booked six persons, including a woman, on the charge of assaulting a villager. Investigating officer (IO) Jagjit Singh said the suspects had been identified as Bholi, Jasraj, Saabi, Pindu, Amarit Pal and Kir, all residents of Kot Badal Khan village. Som Nath, a resident of the same village, told the police that the suspects barged into his house on the afternoon of July 5. They attacked him with weapons and threatened him. The IO said a case under Sections 115(2), 118(1), 3335, 351(2) and 61(2) of the BNS had been registered against the suspects. OC

Man held for supplying liquor

Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a person on the charge of supplying liquor. Investigating officer (IO) Balvir Chand said the suspect had been identified as Sukhraj Singh, a resident of Jaffar Wal village. The IO said the suspect, who was driving a car, was signalled to stop for checking at a naka on May 31. He, however, did not stop and fled the spot. When the police chased him, he left his vehicle near Jaffar Wal village and fled the spot leaving his car behind. During checking, the police recovered 10 bottles of illegal liquor from the vehicle. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Punjab Excise Act was registered against the suspect. The police also impounded the car. OC

Man arrested with 5 gm heroin

Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a drug peddler on the charge of selling heroin. The suspect has been identified as Surjit Singh, alias Gabbar, a resident of Rame village. Investigating officer (IO) and Malsian police post-in-charge Kewal Singh said 5 grams of heroin was recovered from his possession. A case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the suspect. OC

Woman hangs self to death

Phagwara: A 55-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself in her house at Nihalgarh village near here on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Parwinder Kaur. Satnampura SHO Gaurav Dhir said the deceased was living alone as her husband Krishan Lal died around 15 years ago. Depression was said to be the reason behind her taking the extreme step. The SHO said the police had registered a case and sent the body to the Civil Hospital here for post-mortem examination.
