The elections will be held in 50 wards with an estimated 2.36 lakh voter base in the city.

The former councillors of the Congress and the SAD have already started highlighting their achievements in the past five years on the social media. The candidates of both parties have already started campaigning in their respective wards.

Gagandeep Singh Chadha, State Secretary of AAP, said: “We are yet to take a decision on contesting the elections. A meeting in this regard will be held in a few days as senior party leaders are busy in view of the ongoing farmers’ protest. We are in the process of strengthening our organisation at the district level and a decision will be taken soon whether the candidates will contest the elections on the party symbol or as Independents.”

Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who floated the splinter Akali group in July, will also take a decision on contesting the MC elections. Dhindsa had stated that they would not allow any party to sail smoothly.

Shot in the arm for Punjab Democratic Party

The Punjab Democratic Party (PDP) received a shot in the arm as the Sanjha Mulazam and Pensioners Manch has decided to support it in the forthcoming Mohali Municipal Corporation elections. Amarjit Singh Walia, spokesperson for the political wing of the manch, said: “The political standard in the state has gone to a low level and every section of society is facing serious problems. The game plan of clever leadership with narrow-minded approach always remains to grab the financial resources of the state, adjust near and dears and sideline the opponents”. PDP leader Gurkirpal Singh Mann welcomed the decision of the manch to adopt the party. A district unit of the PDP was also formed on the occasion.
