AAP supremo calls for election of Dalit Mayor
AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday called on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to conduct mayoral elections without further delay, emphasising the need for a member of the Dalit community to be elected to the position.
He accused the BJP of orchestrating a “conspiracy” to deprive the Scheduled Caste community of its rights by delaying the elections. His message was delivered by Mayor Shelly Oberoi during an event to regularise the jobs of 607 sanitation workers.
“This year, a Mayor from the SC community was supposed to be elected in the MCD,” Oberoi read from Kejriwal’s letter. “After my release from jail, I learnt that, as part of a conspiracy, the mayoral elections were not conducted behind my back. They deliberately took away the rights of the SC community. This cannot be tolerated. I request immediate elections and for the SC community to receive their rightful representation,” he added.
Kejriwal was scheduled to attend the event but was unable to due to an emergency.
