AAP raises concerns over voter distribution
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday raised concerns over voter distribution across polling booths in Delhi ahead of the upcoming elections.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, AAP’s National Secretary Pankaj Gupta cited a notice, dated August 7, issued by the ECI, which stated that it was planning to redistribute the voters in excess of 1,500 per booth to the booths where the voters are less than 1,500.
However, the AAP has raised logistical and operational concerns with the proposed redistribution. The party pointed out that it was practically impossible for a single booth to manage more than 650 voters within the 11-hour voting window, given the historical turnout of about 65 per cent.
The AAP argued that no booth should exceed 1,000 voters. The party suggested several recommendations to the ECI — redistribute voters only to booths where the voter count is below 1,000, limit voter numbers per booth to 1,000 during redistribution, ensure family members are allocated to the same booth for ease of voting, avoid relocating voters to faraway booths, which may inconvenience families and consider creating extra booths in overcrowded areas to distribute voters evenly and proposing a setup where each booth has around 750 voters.
