AAP MLAs protest against Delhi L-G order
Legislators of the AAP disrupted proceedings in the Delhi Assembly on Friday, protesting against what they described as an “unconstitutional order” from Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena regarding the standing committee election of the MCD. The protests led Speaker Ram Niwas Goel to adjourn the Assembly for 15 minutes. The AAP MLAs expressed their anger over the abrupt scheduling of the election.
AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar said, “Only the Mayor has the right to adjourn the MCD House and also to conduct the elections. But the L-G wrote a letter on Thursday, asking for the conduct of the election; he has tried to murder democracy.” Kumar further said this country would be run by Baba Saheb’s Constitution and not by dictatorship.
The protests continued outside the Delhi Assembly near the Mahatma Gandhi statue, where the MLAs raised slogans against the BJP and the L-G.
AAP MLA Dilip Pandey alleged, “The L-G is trying to interfere in the constitutional proceedings and making a mockery of the system.”
The controversy erupted after the L-G ordered the election of a member of the MCD standing committee to be held at 1 pm, with an Additional Municipal Commissioner as the presiding officer.
