Meanwhile, the move to start a CNG plant at Bhogpur for handling 70 tonnes of wet waste daily hit a roadblock today, with residents of the area opposing any such move.

Amid the issue of waste management, MC employees have also started demanding the filling of 1,196 posts across Punjab so that the cities could be maintained well. The employee unions have demanded that recruitment, especially for Jalandhar, should be expedited since the CM was going to be there often.

The DC said he had ordered that the bio-mining operations be started soon at the Wariana landfill, adding that the bidding process had received approval from the authorities concerned. The MC would soon begin processing the pick-up of about 500 metric tonnes of waste daily through the bio-mining initiative.

The issue of segregation of waste at source assumes importance as the NGT has issued strict directions to the civic body to ensure that segregation by every household must be done at the time of waste collection from the doorstep. Officials have been told to ensure at least 80% compliance
