The Kangra police have registered 8,815 migrant labourers in the district from January to December this year. In a press release today, Shallini Agnihotri, Superintendent of Police (SP), Kangra, stated that 8,662 migrant labourers registered in the district were from various states across the country and 153 from Nepal.

The SP said police stations of different states were contacted for character verification of labourers. Besides, the general public, villagers and panchayat representatives had been informed from time to time that if any migrant labourer, hawker or vendor was seen roaming in Kangra district without police registration, then he should be instructed to get his verification done at the police station concerned.

Apart from this, if any local resident rents a house/room to a person, who has come to Kangra district from another state for employment, then it would be the responsibility of the landlord to get him registered at the police station concerned. In case of failure to do so, legal action would be taken against landlord, the SP said.

Earlier, many trader organisations had demanded action against hawkers from other states who were allegedly hurting their business interests.
