800 students from Sangrur’s 10 govt schools enrol in SPC programme

The Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme, being run by the district police in 10 government senior secondary schools of the Sangrur district, has proven to be a boon for students of classes 8 and 9 as around 800 of them have enrolled in it.

The programme was launched in August 2023 in the district to impart knowledge to the students about the functioning of the Police Department and inculcate the qualities of team spirit, discipline, nation building and respect for elders, etc., in the students.

These 10 government senior secondary schools are located in Tibba (Sherpur), Ghabdan (Sangrur), Channo (Bhawanigarh), Gharachon (Bhawanigarh), Shahpur Kalan (Cheema), Sheron (Cheema), Badrukhan (Sangrur), Bhutal Kalan (Lehra), Chhahar (Chhajli) and Andana (Khanauri) villages of the district. Eighty students (40 of Class 8 and 9 each) from every school were enrolled under the SPC programme.

To impart knowledge about cybercrime, traffic rules, ‘Saanjh Kendras’, ill effects of drugs, etc. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Sangrur, Sartaj Singh Chahal has already formed a team of officials concerned that visits these schools from time to time. Besides, students of these schools also visit the district police headquarters here to know about the functioning of various police offices.

Some days ago, students of Government Senior Secondary School, Ghabdan (Sangrur) visited the District Police Headquarters and Police Line, Sangrur. During their visit, these students visited the cyber police station, where SHO Inspector Harjeet Kaur addressed them. She briefed them about cybercrimes such as online financial frauds. DSP (Headquarters) Rupinder Kaur Bajwa told the students of Ghabdan School about the crimes against children and urged them to report even minor incidents of crime against children on child helpline number 1098 and 112 — emergency helpline number. Sangrur SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal said a team of the Sangrur district police regularly visited these 10 schools and educated the students about cybercrime, traffic rules, working of ‘Saanjh Kendras’ and services such as verification of passport, character, police clearance certificates, missing documents, service in public and private sectors.
