Shimla, August 6

The outdoor patient services (OPDs) of all super-specialty departments of Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) will start at Atal Super-Specialty Medical Institute at Chamiyana, located on the outskirts of the city, from August 12 onwards. The indoor patient services (IPD) and emergency services of these departments will continue to function from the IGMC for another two months or so.

“The OPDs of eight super-specialty departments – urology, cardiology, nephrology, endocrinology, plastic surgery, gastroenterology, neurology and CVTS - will start at Chamiyana from August 12. We are looking to shift the indoor patient services and emergency services related to these debarments from IGMC by September end,” said Dr Brij Sharma, Principal, Atal Super-Specialty Medical Institute.

The super-specialty hospital, built at a cost of over Rs 250 crore, was inaugurated in September, 2022, by the then Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur. It’s been more than two years since the hospital was inaugurated but it’s yet to roll out its entire range of services. Currently, neurology and urology are conducting its OPD services at the hospitals.

The biggest hurdle in the way of the hospital becoming fully functional was the narrow and steep road to the hospital. The PWD has widened the road but the work is still not complete. “The road is now much better, except for the initial 300-400 metre where the road is narrow and there’s not enough space for the vehicles to cross. We will request the police authorities to manage traffic at this particular stretch,” said Dr Sharma.

“Also, we will request the NHAI authorities to ensure their tippers carrying construction material don’t ply on this road during the OPD hours,” said Dr Sharma. He further said that some HRTC buses were already plying on the route, and more would run once the OPDs start functioning at the hospital.
