8 foreign-made arms smuggled from Pak seized, two arrested
Acting on an intelligence input, Counter Intelligence, Amritsar, has arrested two persons and confiscated eight sophisticated foreign-made pistols from their possession.
According to the police, the weapon consignment was smuggled from Pakistan and the accused were going to deliver those to an unidentified operative here. Those arrested were identified as Jagjit Singh alias Nikku and Gurwinder Singh alias Gandhi, both residents of Kaulowal village here.
Among the weapons seized included four Austria-made Glock pistols, two Turkey-made 9mm pistols and two X-Shot Zigana .30 bore pistols along with 10 cartridges.
DGP, Punjab Police, Gaurav Yadav, said that the police have identified the kingpin of the racket and police teams have been constituted to arrest him.
“Teams from Counter Intelligence, Amritsar, learnt that several persons in the border belt here were indulging in the smuggling of heavy consignments of weapons from Pakistan to carry out targeted killings and disturb the peaceful atmosphere in Punjab. Acting swiftly, police teams laid a trap and arrested Jagjit and Gurwinder from Nurpur Padhri near Gharinda in Amritsar,” he said.
The two were working at the behest of another weapon smuggler who was identified by Counter Intelligence cops during preliminary investigation. Raids are on to nab him and further establish their links in Pakistan and on this side of the Indo-Pak border, he added.
“The kingpin of this module was is in contact with Pakistan-based weapon smugglers via encrypted apps,” the DGP said.
An FIR under Section 25 of the Arms Act and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) Amritsar. The accused will be produced in court and taken on police remand for further probe.
