68.2% polling in 31 wards of Kalka MC

Polling in 31 wards of the Kalka Municipal Council today remained peaceful as 68.2 per cent voting was witnessed. A total of 59,741 voters exercised their franchise from 7 am to 6 pm at the 97 polling booths set up in 49 polling stations. Eight candidates were in the fray for the election to the post of president, while 135 candidates were contesting the posts of councillor. Their fate has been sealed in the EVMs and the results will be announced on June 22.

There were long queues of voters at polling booths in the morning. Men, women and youngsters participated in the voting with enthusiasm. Of a total of 87, 617 voters, 59, 741 voters cast their vote. The presidential candidates, along with their families, visited polling stations after casting their vote.

There was an altercation between workers of the BJP and the Congress in Ward No. 30. It was stated that when Congress MLA Pradeep Chaudhary reached a booth in the ward, a woman alleged that some people had abused her. A scuffle between the two sides ensued. However, with the intervention of people and the MLA, the matter was resolved amicably.

District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner Mahavir Kaushik took stock of the election process. He interacted with polling agents and voters. General observer Geeta Bharti and DCP Surinder Pal Singh were also present.

In order to conduct the elections in a free, fair and peaceful manner, tight security arrangements were made all polling stations. Apart from the reserve polling parties, additional police force was also deployed. Duty magistrates and supervisors were appointed to keep an eye on the situation.

Minor scuffle at Ward number 30
