Loans worth about Rs 6 crore have been approved for 1,672 self-help groups of Rupnagar district with an aim to improving the lot of women living in rural areas.

Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain said Punjab State Rural Livelihood Mission (PSRLM) was a joint mission being run by the Centre and State Government under which women of poor families in villages were linked with the self-help groups. The loan approvals will further give the boost to the self-help groups.

“Through self-help groups, the habit of saving has been promoted among women. The government also provides financial assistance from time to time so that the women can run small self-employment ventures, with which they can increase their family income and rise above the poverty line,” he said.
