The incident was reported to the Kandaghat police on Sunday by the student after his parents reached the university campus.

Solan SP Gaurav Singh said a case under Sections 115(2), 127(2), 190,191(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita had been registered against five students on the complaint of the first-year student for causing harm, wrongful confinement, unlawful assembly and rioting as well as Section 3 of the HP Educational Institution (Prohibition of Ragging) Act, 2009. Three of them have been arrested.

The incident took place around 11.30 pm on Saturday when two students — Manik and Karan — came to the first-year student’s room and directed him to accompany them to another room where senior students were present.

He was forcibly taken to the other room by the duo when he refused to follow the diktat.

After he entered the room, the door was closed. Senior students, including Kartik, Karan Dogra, Divyansh and Chirag, besides others were present in the room, the complainant alleged.

He further alleged that he was forced to consume alcohol and on refusing to do so he was kicked and mercilessly beaten up with a belt.

The complainant was made to sleep in their room only and let out at 9 next morning. He informed his parents who reached the campus from Bilaspur and reported the incident to the police.

Among those booked included Karan Dogra (19) who hails from Udhampur, Chirag Rana (19) from Balh in Mandi and Divyansh (19), a resident of Bhota in Hamipur. They have been arrested and probe was under way.

Solan DSP Anil Dhaulta said the role of other students who were witness to the ragging incident was also being probed.

The case gained prominence after a video of the ragging episode went viral on social media where a student was seen being mercilessly thrashed inside a hostel room.

Two students expelled, 2 rusticated

Vineet Kumar, Registrar, Bahra University, said a meeting of the anti-ragging committee was convened on Monday. Based on the committee findings, two students Saksham and Kartik who beat up the first-year student had been expelled from the university, while two others — Karan Dogra and Divyansh — had been rusticated from the university and expelled from the hostel till further orders.

The student in whose room the victim was harassed, but had no role in the incident had been warned to desist from such acts, the Registrar added.

Saksham is studying law, while Kartik is a computer science student. Karan Dogra is also a computer science student and Divyansh is a commerce student. The Registrar said the incident was condemnable and they were probing the facts further while cooperating with the police. The warden took attendance at 10 pm and everything was fine by then, stated the Registrar.
