5 more succumb to Covid, death toll 65 in Ludhiana

The district witnessed its first positive case on March 24 and on July 5, the infections reached the 1,070 mark. In the next 22 days, the district saw a sudden jump in positive cases. With 121 fresh cases reported today, the number has reached 2,687.
Meanwhile, five persons lost their lives to the virus. They include a 65-year-old man from Chandar Nagar (Rajindra Hospital in Patiala), a 60-year-old resident of Halwara (SPS Hospital), an 80-year-old woman from Karnail Singh Nagar (Rajindra Hospital), a 50-year-old man from Tajpur Road (CMCH) and a 74-year-old resident of Bal Singh Nagar who was admitted to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. All of them had co-morbidities.
Those who have tested positive include 22 police personnel from Division No 3, Division No. 8 and CP office. Most of the others are contacts of positive people. Five undertrials have also tested positive.
Of five persons testing positive from Khanna, four are women in the age group of 14-19 years. The other cases have been reported from Subzi mandi, Chaura Bazaar, BRS Nagar, Civil Lines, Jamalpur, Rajiv Gandhi Colony, Sudhar, Gobind Nagar, Giaspura, Doraha, Janakpuri, Kundanpuri, French Colony, Citizen Enclave, Jawadi Kalan, Shahpur Road and Fountain Chowk.
New testing centres
Meanwhile, Covid 19 testing would also be done at three Community Health Centres located at Jawaddi, Subhash Nagar and Giaspura. With the start of these facilities, the number of government centres for Covid testing has reached six.
At present, Covid sampling is done at Civil Hospital of Ludhiana, Mother and Child Hospital near Vardhman Mills on Chandigarh Road and at Meritorious School near Nehru Rose Garden. Besides, the sampling is also done at the Police Lines (for police personnel) and at the Central Jail (for inmates/undertrials). The administration has also deployed mobile teams in containment/micro-containment zones.
