5 held for attack on sarpanch nominee
The police claimed to have solved a case in which a sarpanch nominee was injured in an attack by unidentified miscreants at Bagrian village in Amargarh subdivision on Friday afternoon.
Five, out of ten suspects, who attacked the former Bagrian sarpanch, Paramjit Singh, when he, along with his supporters, was pasting his banners at the village bus stands, were arrested when they were attempting to leave the region on Saturday. The police said the suspects identified as Akashdeep Singh, Gurpreet Singh Guri, Harmanpreet Singh, Manpreet Singh Vicky and Arjanpal Singh Aran.
Though the police are yet to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the assault with sharp weapons, the preliminary investigations revealed at least five more accomplices were involved in the incident.
SSP Gagan Ajit Singh said the former sarpanch, Paramjit Singh, who is also contesting the election for the post of sarpanch during the ensuing election, was seriously injured in an attack in which the assailants had used axes, swords and rods.
He said having registered an attempt to murder case against unknown miscreants, the district police had deputed cops led by Amargarh DSP Davinder Singh Sandhu, DSP (I) Satish Kumar, CIA in-charge Harjinder Singh and Amargarh SHO Gurpreet Kaur to investigate the case.
The SSP said, “Having corroborated fragments of evidence collected by studying CCTV footage and witnesses, our cops identified the assailants who had come with muffled faces and succeeded in arresting them from different places.”
He said the other suspects in the case would be arrested soon.
