Sanjay Kundu, Director General of Police, Himachal Pradesh, said five districts of the Mandi zone — Mandi, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Bilaspur and Hamirpur — would be equipped with intelligent traffic management system to monitor traffic.
“It is expected that in the coming year intelligent traffic system will be set up in all five districts and efforts are on in this direction,” he added.
He said the intelligent traffic management system had been started in Kullu and Manali and challans were being done for violations through ANPR cameras. He said the police was procuring high-quality drones with the help of district administrations and road safety funds.
The DGP appreciated the efforts of Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti SPs for efficient traffic management at the Atal tunnel.
He added that around 10,000 vehicles were expected to visit Manali on the New Year’s eve and adequate preparations had been done by the police.
He claimed that the Himachal police had been the best throughout the country in Covid management. He said 42,000 challans had been issued for not wearing masks. He added that 17 FIRs had been lodged against violation of Covid norms. He said awareness drives were also carried out due to which the spurt in Covid cases was curtailed. The DGP said 1,800 police personnel were infected while performing their duty and four lives were lost.
He said there was a 23 per cent reduction in road accidents and deaths and around 36 per cent decrease in injury cases. He said there was a surge in cyber crime in the recent past, adding that efforts would be made to work out serious cases on priority and decrease pendency.
He said the police had signed an MoU with the IIT-Mandi in September to provide technical support to find solutions to crime-related issues. He said the MoU would be signed with the National Law University, Shimla, to increase capacity related to various laws.
The DGP said overall crime against women and children had decreased by 25 per cent. He said the police had tightened the noose around drug mafias and many cases had been solved. He said financial investigation of people involved in drug trafficking was being done to find an end to the solution.
