47-Year-Old Woman Battling Adenomyosis Conceives Successfully at Birla Fertility & IVF, Chandigarh
For Lata (name changed), the dream of motherhood seemed elusive after six years of marriage and two failed IVF attempts using donor eggs. Despite her determination, she faced several medical challenges. She was diagnosed with adenomyosis, a uterine condition where endometrial tissues grow on the uterine wall, which often leads to infertility. Refusing to give up, Lata sought expert care at Birla Fertility & IVF in Chandigarh, hoping for a solution to her uphill battle.
But what exactly is adenomyosis?
The condition occurs when the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows into the muscle wall, causing the uterus to enlarge. This disrupts its normal function, leading to heavy menstrual bleeding, severe cramping, and an inhospitable environment for embryo implantation.
Women in their 30s and 40s are particularly at risk, but it can occur at any age. Like Lata, many women remain unaware of the condition until they face fertility challenges.
Adenomyosis is also linked to previous uterine surgeries, such as C-sections, and conditions like endometriosis. Given Lata’s diagnosis, Dr. Rakhi Goyal, a leading fertility specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF, approached the case with care and precision. Initial scans revealed a slight indentation in Lata’s uterine cavity, shedding light on why her previous IVF attempts had resulted in biochemical pregnancies, where embryos were lost before full implantation.
Dr. Goyal's first priority was managing the adenomyosis. Lata underwent hormonal treatment aimed at shrinking the affected area and improving the uterine environment. Once her condition was under control, the team turned their focus to the embryo transfer process.
“Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) using donor eggs offered Lata the best chance of success,” Dr. Goyal explained. “To further increase the likelihood of implantation, the team performed laser-assisted hatching to help the embryo break through its shell and attach to the uterine wall. Additionally, they used embryo glue, a special medium designed to improve embryo attachment.”
Lata’s perseverance, combined with the advanced care and customised treatment plan at Birla Fertility & IVF, finally led to a positive BHCG test — the confirmation she had longed for. Lata was pregnant, a dream fulfilled after years of struggle. Now well into her pregnancy, she continues to receive regular antenatal care, and both mother and child are thriving.
