Dr Ishank Chabbewal, son of Hoshiarpur MP Dr Raj Kumar, has been fielded by AAP from the Chabbewal Assembly segment.
The 30-year-old radiologist pursued MBBS from Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, and headed his father’s Lok Sabha campaign. He was also actively involved in the panchayat poll. Declaration of Ishank’s candidature comes two days before his 31st birthday on October 22.
Dr Raj Kumar had won the Lok Sabha elections from the Hoshiarpur constituency with a thumping margin of 44,100 votes. The two-time MLA was first elected from Chabbewal in 2017 and again in 2022. He quit Congress in March to embrace AAP.
The family’s big wins in Chabbewal proved a decisive factor for Ishank bagging the ticket. In the Lok Sabha poll, Dr Raj Kumar got a lead of 27,000 votes from the Chabbewal segment.
Ishank’s uncle Dr Jatinder Kumar won as sarpanch from family’s ancestral village Manjhi. AAP supporters said more than 200 sarpanches gathered at Dr Raj Kumar’s house to greet the family after the panchayat poll.
The MP said, “We thank the party. Ishank is a doctor and has been active on the ground. He worked very hard in the constituency and headed my campaign. The party carried out surveys in which he emerged as the first choice.”
Dr Raj Kumar said, “At present, no party poses a challenge to Ishank.”
Thanking the AAP leadership, Ishank said, “I am overwhelmed by the support shown by the residents of Chabbewal. I will serve the people with same dedication as my father did. Development works, education and employment opportunities are on my priority list.”
