24x7 water supply key part of modern, efficient urban infra: MC Commissioner

An awareness generation campaign for the 24x7 water supply pilot project was organised in Mani Majra today by the Municipal Corporation (MC) and Chandigarh Smart City Ltd.

The campaign saw interactive sessions with RWAs and local representatives. Mayor Kuldeep Kumar, Amit Kumar, Commissioner MC, and Sanjay Arora, Chief Engineer, MC, were also present during the interactive session.

The event also highlighted the efforts being done to ensure a continuous and reliable water supply to all households. It was briefed by officials that the project is a part of the Smart Cities Mission and aimed at modernising the city’s water management system for better service and sustainability. The scope of this project includes retrofitting of old intermittent water supply system with advanced infrastructure that provides uninterrupted water to residents.

The project includes installation of smart water meters and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) pumps, which help save energy, reduce water wastage and improve efficiency.

The system also enables real-time monitoring of water usage, allowing authorities to detect and address issues like water loss and unauthorised connections.

Officials stated that key highlights of the project include, installation of 23 km of new pipelines in four zones; stabilising water supply for 14–18 hours daily, with plans to achieve full 24x7 coverage soon and monitoring Quality Quantity through SCADA System.

The event also included guided tours of the new infrastructure, where residents could learn more about the advanced technology and the improvements made to the water supply system of Manimajra. However, some raised issues such as pipe leaks and uneven water pressure in certain areas were addressed and residents were assured of curbing all such problems in time bound manner.

To assist residents with new water connections and replacing the old ones, grievance or for any query they can call or WhatsApp at the helpline number 9503275281. Grievances can also be registered via the ‘I am Chandigarh’ app, ensuring quick responses to any issues.

The Commissioner emphasised the importance of this initiative, saying, “The 24x7 water supply is a key part of our vision for a modern, sustainable and efficient urban infrastructure. We are committed to providing uninterrupted services and addressing any challenges to ensure the success of this project for the people of Chandigarh.”
