2 die in Mohali road mishap

Two Mohali residents died on the spot after a speeding SUV hit a luxury car near the Sector 78-79 light point around 11 pm on Sunday.

Daljit Singh, a resident of Sector 78, and Gurbans Singh of Sector 80, were crushed to death even as the safety airbags of both vehicles got deployed. Both were around 45 years of age. After the high-speed crash the vehicles were badly damaged. The SUV driver reportedly fled the spot.

The police said the recklessly driven white-coloured SUV was coming from the Airport Road side, while the black-coloured sedan was crossing from Sector 78-Sector 79 light point when the accident took place. The SUV rammed into the co-passenger side door of the sedan and dragged it to some distance.

Deceased Gurbans Singh was said to be a confidant of former health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, while Daljit Singh used to a controversial bar in Sector 70. The former Mohali MLA and his supporters reached the Phase-VI Civil Hospital. After the post mortem the bodies were handed over to the kin for last rites today.

Sohana SHO Jaspreet Singh Kahlon said, “A case has been registered at the Sohana police station and the absconding driver, hailing from Santemajra, will be arrested soon.”

Locals said the intersection is an accident-prone area where several fatalities have taken place earlier.
