2.6 kg heroin seized near IB, one arrested
A 19-year-old youth from Dhanur village in Sriganganagar district was arrested by the police today for illegally possessing over two kg heroin smuggled from Pakistan.
Superintendent of Police Gaurav Yadav said 2.6 kg of heroin had been recovered from the possession of Gagandeep Singh of Dhanur village. He said the contraband was dropped through drone in the Indian territory by cross-border smugglers.
Sources said some acquaintances of Gagandeep living in Punjab had got heroin dropped by contacting Pakistani smugglers. Two family members of Gagandeep, who were lodged in a jail in Punjab, came in contact with drug smugglers, said sources.
Preliminary investigation indicated that Gagandeep used to sell heroin to drug addicts in and around his village. At the time of his arrest, he was getting continuous calls and messages on his cellphones from suspected addicts.
Sources added that the police retrieved the contraband hidden by Gagandeep from his fields.
A case has been registered against Gagandeep under the NDPS Act. The value of the seized heroin in the international market is estimated to be around Rs 10 crore.
