1,920 students take entrance test for coaching of maths olympiad
As many as 1,920 students, including 1097 girls, from Classes VII to XI participated in an entrance test for the selection of meritorious students to receive coaching for the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) scheduled for September 2025.
The test, organised across six blocks of the district, aims at identifying 120 meritorious students who will be provided free coaching and other resources to prepare for the competition.
As per the teachers, for the first time, students from government schools in Karnal district are being groomed for the competitive exam. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Yash Jaluka visited the exam centre at PM Shree Government Senior Secondary School, behind the old bus stand and directed the teachers to ensure a fair and transparent examination process. He also directed teachers to declare the results by December 4.
“Our sole selection criteria is merit," said ADC Jaluka.
“An interaction programme for the parents of selected students will be held on December 6 with Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh. Coaching classes will begin from Friday, with a target to cover the majority of the syllabus by June 2025 to prepare students effectively for the IMO,” the ADC said.
The test was conducted at six government schools, including PM Shree Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS) in Assandh where 186 students (88 boys and 98 girls), 429 students (200 boys and 229 girls) appeared for exams at Government Model Sanskriti Senior Secondary School in Gharaunda. Similarly, PM Shree GSSS Indri School recorded an attendance of 229 students (124 boys and 105 girls).
As many as 505 students (160 boys and 345 girls) appeared for the exams at PM Shree GSSS, Karnal, while 334 students (156 boys and 178 girls) appeared at PM Shree GSSS, Nilokheri, and at Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Nissing 237 students appeared (95 boys and 142 girls).
District Nodal Officer Chatter Pal confirmed that all necessary arrangements were made for smooth conduct and as per the directions of the ADC, the results would be displayed on December 4 by 2 pm.
Jaluka has also instructed model schools and PM Shree schools to procure at least one set of mathematics Olympiad preparation books by December 6. “The step is being initiated to enhance the educational prospects of students from government schools," the ADC added.
