18-hour rain maroons Jalandhar city areas
Jalandhar, August 29
It was perhaps the longest spell of rainfall of the season in Jalandhar on Thursday. The downpour which started in the wee hours around 3 am continued till 9 pm, lasting for as long as 18 hours.
The residents had some relief for a few minutes but it started drizzling again. Moderate to heavy showers, especially till this afternoon, led to all city roads getting marooned. The rain made the lives of the commuters tough.
The school students faced a tough time as they got drenched even as they wore raincoats or carried umbrellas to the campuses. Those going via autorickshaws had to experience a topsy-turvy ride through inundated roads as the three-wheelers were seen getting imbalanced.
“I wore slippers to the school and carried my shoes and socks in my bag to change there. There was accumulation of water at the entry gates of my school and the trick saved my day”, said Janvi, a high school student from Jalandhar Cantt.
Owing to rain, there was less footfall of people to public places like bus stand, office of the Deputy Commissioner and other public service offices.
The low-lying areas of the city, including Sodal Road, Basti areas, Dilbagh Nagar, Domoria underbridge and sections of posh areas too like Model Town, Urban Estate and New Jawahar Nagar, also got marooned.
