149th Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan to be dedicated to Zakir Hussain

The 149th Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan will be dedicated to Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, who died at a hospital in San Francisco on Monday.

The Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Mahasabha announced that the festival will be held on the premises of the Shri Devi Talab Mandir in Jalandhar from December 27 to 29.

The sangeet sammelan will witness various artists including Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, Pt. Kumar Bose and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi’s grandson Viraj Joshi (vocal). It will also witness the Tabla and Mrigandam jugalbandi from Pt. Abhishek Mishra and Pt. Peravali Jaya Bhaskar, and recital on the Pakhwaj from Prashant Kumar and Nishant Kumar Mallick.

The three-day sammelan will be preceded by Harivallabh Sangeet Pratiyogita – which will be held from December 23 to 26.

Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Mahasabha president Purnima Beri said, “We are dedicating this year’s festival to late Ustad Zakir Hussain. He has been an integral part of the Harivallabh family and we have had the honour to listen to many of his breathtaking recitals. His demise is a very huge loss for us. The festival this year will begin with a tabla recital.”
