Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is set to boost security on its campus and hostels by installing 147 CCTV cameras. A budget of Rs 20 lakh has been allocated from the university’s resources for this initiative. The cameras will be placed in all hostel corridors, with a central control room established for real-time monitoring of footage.

This step follows the tragic death of a first-year law student in September, raising concerns about security measures on campus. Student groups like the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) have been urging university authorities to enhance security, especially against the entry of outsiders into hostels.

Chief Warden, Prof Roshan Lal Zinta, emphasised that the CCTV system would help maintain strict surveillance in hostels, reducing unauthorised entry and incidents of fights. He added that while outsiders are prohibited from entering the hostels, they often manage to sneak in due to multiple entry points, an issue the new system aims to address.

Installation locations for the cameras are currently being marked. Also, a supply order has already been placed.
