Rocking the region
Lesle Lewis, who launched his Rockstars Academy in Jalandhar recently, feels musicians can not be created but they can definitely be honed
Manpriya Singh

Coke Studio, Indie Pop, remixes, classical fusion as Colonial Cousins…Lesle Lewis can take credit on a much bigger scale than has already been given to him.

Even the ad jingles that almost share pedestal with classics! Remember the ever popular Nirma Washing Powder, Mango Frooti—Fresh & Juicy, Amul’s doodh, doodh, doodh?

However, lately as a mascot for Model United Nations, the singer composer has been in a rendition mood of a different kind. “The curriculum has been composed by me and my team and yes, good musicians can definitely be honed, if not created,” he shares, while driving off from Jallandhar, after launching his Rockstars Academy.

As the name suggests, the composer is all set to share his immense knowledge in the field with a hand-picked few.

Genetically yours

As someone born into a musically inclined home, taking it up was more natural than special. “My father being a choreographer knew a lot about music, so there was always a guitar or a tabla in the house. He would take me along for recordings. I have grown up listening to RD Burman, Kalyanji Anandji, Laxmikant Pyarelal.”

The Indian composers have been just as much of an influence as likes of The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

Nevertheless, the decision to become a musician did not come without a fair share of warning.

“I remember Ashaji like a mother said to me that this field is not for everybody.” But the fact that it was a tough competitive world didn’t bother by now. He laughs, “A few years later, she herself offered me to do her first remix album comprising RD Burman melodies.”

Capsule course

Ever since then it’s been a fulfilling innings in the world of music industry, having worked with the likes of Asha Bhosle to Yo Yo Honey Singh.

He laughs, “Yo Yo Honey Singh is a rockstar and Sonu Nigam is a rockstar. They are both in their own rights because they are at the top of their game and like what they are doing.” If you get the point.

Coming up is, as he likes to describe it, “Very interesting and new kind of music for several things and Bollywood, where I am singing, even writing lyrics.” Meanwhile, there’s a lot happening, like Windsong Music Festival, Hyderabad. “I will be opening the Windsong Music Festival which is happening in Hyderabad soon. It’s always good to connect to the young crowd. They have so much energy that it is infectious.” And of course there’s the academy. He signs off, “I can’t promise to make you a rockstar overnight but I would definitely teach you things in a year which would take you four years to learn.” We are almost sure about that.

No remixes, no clubs: Akbar Sami
DJ Sami feels remix is a genre in itself as one needs to hear the best of old world melodies against new sound technology
Manpriya Singh

Discount, deny, do whatever...but what perhaps you cannot do to remixes is dismiss them. They can’t turn their heads around or overlook. Neither the numerous clubs sprouting in the country nor the crowd that drive those clubs. The only thing that needs to be redefined is the term remix itself. “Both the concept of clubs and remixes have been brought from the West. If you don’t have remixes, you don’t have clubs, it is as simple as that. You need to hear the best of old world melodies against new sound technology…Remix is a genre of its own,” DJ Akbar Sami addresses the moot point for the Nth time and silences his critics and even his followers alike.

And rightly so. “No matter how good is a song, so many times when you hear it against the old systems, it sounds misplaced. It is a way of making today’s crowd connect with the track and also make it groovy,” he adds, while in Chandigarh to play for the opening Saturday night of the newly launched Club Miami—9.

City connect

It is not his first or even second visit to the city, because as he likes to put it, “I keep coming here, at least twice to thrice a year.” He adds, “I’ve noticed that people who used to be very hard-core Punjab loving audience has now evolved. Decades have gone by, during which they have travelled, studied abroad and come back. The kids have grown and the new generation understands music much better.”

Home work

Never mind the familiarity, what he hasn’t still stopped doing is read or even size-up his audience beforehand. “A good DJ knows what to play when the place is empty, packed or when it is busy…I design my own music list as per the city I’m going to be playing in, whether it is in India or outside.” For as he likes to put it, “That saves you the trouble of having to take in people’s request. Because if people are requesting, that somewhere means you are not doing your job properly.”

Career graph

Success stories, when scripted, are valued just as much for their accidental beginnings.

“I was originally into choreography and even had Arshad Warsi and Farah Khan in my group.”

But deejaying happened accidentally and how. “I got so lost and engaged in deejaying that I thought this was it for me.” Ditto for his audience who don’t mind still being high on Jalwa soundtracks, among several others. Coming up are as many as three projects. “I’m coming up with original compositions wherein there’s an attempt to revive the romanticism and the charm of old melodies.” The lyrics have been penned by Jaaved Akhtar and there will be Sufi compostions too. “Apart from that I’m working on a remix album and an Indian folk album with Gujarati, Marathi and Punjabi influences.”

Amidst the open-minded approach to music, where he does draw the line is abusive language. “I never call music good or bad. To each his own. It is alright as long people don’t bring in offensive language into the play.” We respect that.

On cloud nine
This one’s addressed to those ever complaining crowds on the lack of places to frequent. Club Miami—9, throws opens its doors to the public with a fair share of promises. Shares Harpreet Nijjar, the MD, “Our sound system is unparalleled in Chandigarh and food has been given just as much of importance, which is not the case with several other clubs in the city.” He leaves it at that.

He did it!
DJ Swami who has launched his latest single, Do it Again, feels music should be able to generate a reaction—good or bad
Amarjot Kaur

With music that defines his soul and traces his journey through different cultures, DJ Swami, who is the founder member of the band, Swami, only intends to discover himself through his music, which he considers is only an extension of his personality.

As he announces the launch of his brand new single, Do it Again, from his up and coming album titled, Upgrade, he waxes eloquent about the Indo-western influences which inspired his creations. “We titled our band Swami precisely because we are discovering a lot of things through music,” begins DJ Swami, as he begins to talk of the pop electro bhangra band comprising DJ Swami, Sur, Liana and S-Endz, who have given hits like Electro Jugni and Desi Rock.

“I belong to Punjab, but having stayed in Birmingham for all this while has made an impact on my taste in music. The band is therefore a fusion of Punjabi and electronic pop music,” says Swami, who has produced music and has been creatively involved with artistes like Stereonation, Shania Twain and Refugee. “While I can naturally relate with bhangra, which has a very energetic dance vibe to it, my knowledge of western music is the one that I have acquired over the years and the fusion of electronic pop with the bhangra is perhaps an extension of my own creativity,” he says.

However, Swami was not deterred by the challenges that came his way, especially with the kind of fusion that he was intending to do. “The biggest task at hand was to blend the character of bhangra music, which is anyway too energetic, with the electronic music that has a western vibe to it,” he says. However, his passion for experimentation kept him sailing through. “All I did was to keep experimenting with music only to discover more about myself. Also, My music is influenced by artistes that I love listening to, including Maroon 5, Daft Punk, Gurdaas Maan and Kuldeep Manak,” he says.

As he talks about the Punjabi music, most of which is defined by Yo Yo Honey Singh, he shares, “I think music must create some ripples and as long as any music, be it good or bad, is able to generate a reaction, it has served its purpose,” he opines. “I will soon be producing music for Zohaib. However, right now I am focusing on my new album, Upgrade,” he shares.

Handle with care
Sukhmani

If you are looking for an inexpensive way to add some style to your home, door handles are perfect. They are small and affordable, but they make a huge impact throughout your home. In addition to this, they are also very convenient to buy and will add to the functionality of any door in your home. With such a wide variety of themes to choose from, you will definitely be able to find the perfect handle for your home.

Speaking in the broader sense, generally there are two types of handles—external/outdoor handles and indoor/interior door handles. The exterior handles are utilised on all main entrances to the home such as front door, back door, side door or service door. On the other hand, interior handles are used on the doors inside the house/office like kitchen doors, cabinet doors and toilet doors.

The use of door handles to compliment a design theme is an art that is sometimes overlooked in these days. From the front door to the back door, visitors to your home will use – and consequently notice your door handles, and they should not be neglected in the overall vision for your home. For example, the door knocker and the front door handle are the first thing any visitor will see or use in your home. This first impression can be used to your advantage to create the look you are after.

Starting with the front door, it is easy to research and find front door handles to create a particular impression. Antique black door handles can be used to give a sense of a traditional welcome and work well to compliment other period features of your home, whether genuinely old or recreated as part of a stylistic vision. Similarly with the use of other materials, a brass door knocker can be an excellent accessory with many ornamental designs available — many of which are themed into Georgian, Victorian or modern door handle ranges. You can even choose to have a similar door handle on your front door to those inside your house, but only bigger than the rest. This will allow you to keep the same style but at the same time also add a small difference to these entrances.

In living and dining rooms, carefully chosen door knobs can help create any theme, from clean, sleek modern stainless steel door fittings to rustic, antique black door knobs that give a country feel. There are a range of inexpensive, attractive porcelain door knobs, together with polished wood door knobs that can fit in nicely with existing or new colour schemes and styles. The ever popular Edwardian door knobs with brass back plates give a period feel together with style and longevity.

Moving into the kitchen, it is easy to select cabinet handles and door knobs which can revitalise existing kitchen furniture. Sometimes it can be as easy as the selection of chrome cabinet handles to lift the look and giving a more modern feel. Similarly, traditional kitchens can be given a face lift with antique brass or pewter cupboard knobs — particularly effective when cabinet doors are stripped back to the wood. Usually, knob ranges will have matching fittings for draws and cupboards, allowing for example — porcelain drawer pull handles to be included with porcelain cupboard knobs.

The current trends for bathrooms focus on modern, contemporary looks, usually with polished chrome or stainless steel handles and accessories. Again, door knob and fitting manufacturers tend to design matching ranges of fittings — meaning door knobs, bathroom cabinet handles, soap baskets, robe hooks, towel rails, soap dispensers and shelves can be purchased as part of a complementary range.

Door handles are made from a variety of materials such as cast brass, sheet aluminum alloy, metal sheet and wood. The door handles made from cast brass material may be copper finished, nickel or chrome plated, bright satin finished and antique finished. The sheet aluminum alloy handles are available in finishes like matt, dyed, satin bright or natural finishes.

While selecting the colour and design of the door handle, make sure that it matches well with the overall interior of your home or office. If you live near the sea, then your door hardware has to be able to withstand the elements. Look for premium materials like stainless steel that are salt resistant and will stand up to the test of time. No matter where you are located, your door hardware needs to be long lasting and remain operable for as long as you need it to.

Always buy these handles in bulk, so that you have these available whenever you need to replace one throughout your home. You can easily replace a broken handle in the future if you have similar ones available.

Platter full of pleasure
Virgin Courtyard, Chandigarh, launches its new winter menu…
Somya Abrol

Vegetarians don’t have it easy, especially in Italia. Even as Virgin Courtyard (VC), Chandigarh, launches its new winter menu, Chef Krishan Hari, backed by eighteen rich years of experience, makes it clear that vegetarians ought to stock up on appetisers, instead of banking on the main course. Thanks to small mercies, however, VC will not find many who complain in Chandigarh!

What Chef Hari does plan to please Chandigarh foodies with, though, is his signature Slow Cooked Pork Belly, a delicacy he’d introduced years ago, around the inception of Virgin Courtyard. “For one, I thought Chandigarh would receive the pork belly well. But then, I can’t even blame our clients; the quality of pork belly we received earlier wasn’t up to the mark, which is why we decided to discontinue it. Now, since we have great quality pork, why not give it another shot!” says the chef.

For appetisers, the vegetarian must-try out of the new menu is Polenta Crusted Gnocchi — crisp potato dumplings flavoured with fennel and spinach, served with chopped, vinaigrette vegetables and mildly spicy tomato salsa. The Pumpkin and Pear Soup (with rosemary oil) is also rather interesting, for off-beat palates, strictly. As for vegetarian main course, the ‘naked’ gnocchi is rather appealing — to the eyes as well. The Ricotta Gnudi with Puttanesca Sauce is the perfect balance of cheese and flour, enveloped in acidic undertones of the vibrant puttanesca (tomato, olives, capers, anchovies, basil etc) sauce.

Enough with the veggies, already! Meat-seekers may revel in their chicken, Walnut and Gorgonzola Salad and fill up later with Bacon Crusted Chicken — chicken-breast topped with bacon crust and mushroom mousse, served with corn puree and jus.

With desserts though, Chef Hari has played rather safe (and swayed from VC’s ‘Italian only’ vow), presenting the likes of Deconstructed Apple Crumble and White Chocolate Mousse.

Taste of the land
Tannur, Hyatt Regency, Ludhiana, brings the best of pan-Indian food on to your plate
Poonam Bindra

With our cuisine going the global route in all its fantastic and comprehensive variations, Tannur, at Hyatt Regency, Ludhiana, has come up with a refreshing change with its typically Indian fare from all states.

A guest can now enjoy the Machar Jhol (fish with potatoes) from West Bengal or the Ghosth Reezala (tender lamb cooked with cashewnut gravy) from Andhra Pradesh or the typical South-Indian specialties. It is interesting to note that our oft used culinary term tandoor is a derivative of the Persian word Tannur.

“With a cuisine spanning North to South, and East to west, our menu is very comprehensive. We try to maintain the authentic flavours of the regions,” says the executive Chef Ravi Kumar. With an ambience that exudes warmth with its colour scheme of charcoal and red, with a highlight decoration of inverted umbrellas, it becomes the ideal setting for a royal private meal, which quite differs from the hustle-bustle of the buffet area.

“We wanted an exclusive family get-together with a sit-down meal, so this is just right for us,” says a visitor, Jaswant Singh. “I have relished Indian specialties like the Gatta Curry or the Peshwari Tikki and of course, the Dal-e-Tannur accompanied by all types of breads straight from the Tandoor.”

And the latest attraction is the ongoing Kashmiri food festival, which takes one through the journey of Waswaan with specific non-veg offerings starting from the Yakhni to the Tangri kebab (marinated and flavoured with saffron), the famous Gushtaba and more. Visitors can also relish the succulent Nadru Ke Kebab, the Bhurani garlic Jhinga, the Lehsuni Malai palak, Paneer-e-Saffron, and more. The accompanying bread is a naan laced with dry fruits. The sweets, of course, are laced with saffron! So it is Kesar Phirni that is the favourite with people.

Air India does some digging

A still from PK
A still from PK

Everyone in Air India team is pestering Rajkumar Hirani’s wife for the story of P.K. There is a lot of buzz around the film and everybody wants to know more about it.

The posters and visuals of the film have only created more buzz and owing to this Rajkumar Hirani’s wife who is a pilot at Air India is being questioned a lot by her colleagues about the story of P.K.

A source close to Hirani informs, “Everyone keeps asking her about the film, its story and Aamir’s role in particular. They are very keen to know any details that she can reveal.”

“But Manjeet is at a loss of word as she herself doesn’t know anything about the film and even if she knew she could not reveal much. Her colleagues did not believe this and were very surprised that she doesn’t know about the film. When she told Raju about this, he just had a good laugh,” adds the source.

Off late Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani are having a good laugh over the stories and rumors doing the rounds about their upcoming film P.K. Almost every other week new stories about P.K. surface. As and when content from the film is released, people come up with new ideas on what the film could be about.

Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan are amused at these stories and in fact enjoy reading them. There is a lot of intrigue around the film and they wish to build the anticipation around it. They have kept the content under wraps as they want people to enjoy the film in its entirety. So far, only songs and a teaser trailer have been released. We can tell you that Aamir Khan plays an alien in the film and that is why he is acting in such a strange manner and is a misfit in society.

Words of wisdom

Shyam Benegal is stepping down as the chairperson of the MAMI Film Festival. He talks about MAMI, IFFI, and movies.

Shyam Benegal
speak out: Shyam Benegal

IFFI 2014

By and large, nice. Like always, it had six to eight good films. It could have been much better. IFFI is a well-funded festival. But a festival is as good as its organisers. Now, IFFI is run by the government. They have a lot of un-utilised resources. A government-run festival has people from varied backgrounds in executive positions. And just when they start understanding cinema, their term runs out. Therefore at MAMI (Mumbai Academy of Moving Images), we give officials an extended term.

Mumbai Film Festival 2014

Paisa bahut kam tha. We had difficulty in finding sponsors after Reliance opted out. Perhaps, the brand did not get the mileage they expected. We had only one centre screening the films, in Andheri. It was well attended by members of the film fraternity. But where was the general public?

New energies

Anupama Chopra (the new festival director) and Kiran Rao (the new chairperson) showed immense enthusiasm in raising funds. I mentioned their names to the trustees because they deserve it. They have more energy and better ideas. It was time that I got younger people on board.

Stepping down from MAMI

Stepping down was on my mind for six years. MAMI is not my inheritance; it belongs to all who love cinema. I shall always remain involved with MAMI, but now I won’t be attending to the day-to-day decisions. My support for MAMI is irrevocable.

Cinema today

I think we are making some good cinema. Some of the recent content is amazing. I think Rajkummar Rao is an ocean of talent. I haven’t seen Alia Bhatt’s work but she seems impressive. I think Anushka has a sunshine-like smile. And I am impressed by the work of Rajkumar Hirani, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee.

Cool bride

Trust Sonam Kapoor to experiment with looks. In her first look from the upcoming film Dolly Ki Doli, the actress looks every bit the cool, sporty bride. The poster features Sonam dressed in a gorgeous Anita Dongre lehenga, finishing off her bridal look with a black leather jacket, sneakers and shades.

The teaser of the Arbaaz Khan production was released and even though it didn’t feature the fashionista, it revealed three suitors for the punk bride with ‘Dolly’ tattoos on their arms.

Directed by debutante Abhishek Dogra, Dolly Ki Doli has Pulki Samrat, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma, playing the three men vying to marry the diva. The film will also feature a special appearance by Saif Ali Khan and a dance number by Malaika Arora Khan.

Dolly Ki Doli is expected to release on February 6.

A special gift for Deepika

Mohit Jain, national record holder of creating maximum websites in shortest duration, has specially created a website for Deepika Padukone to gift it to her. He is a 19-year-old guy from Madhya Pradesh and is a huge fan of the actress.

Recently, he created 36 websites in 13 hours. (Most websites created in the short duration). His creation iamdeepikapadukone.com is a one-stop website for all fans of the actress. It has all the information about Deepika right from her family to her career in Indian cinema. The website also has lesser seen childhood pictures of the actress.

Deepika is very big on social media and enjoys a huge fan following of over 23 million fans. The actress always makes an effort to acknowledge initiatives of her fans and makes them feel special in some way or the other.

She took a fan to an award ceremony, she got 10 fans to walk the ramp with her for a brand, she called 5 fans to meet her and did a live chat with them, she acknowledged a fan, who made the Naina Talwar Facebook page for her.

Deepika’s spokesperson confirmed the news and added, “He has been trying to reach Deepika and got in touch with her team to share details of the website. However, she is currently traveling from Kolkata to Delhi for the shoot schedules of her next film, Piku. So, she will get in touch with him once she gets some spare time.”

Missing the chill

Kriti Sanon has been missing the Delhi winter. The young actress, who hails from Delhi, has shifted to Mumbai for work and has been missing her home town for its chilly weather.

She loves the winter and always looks forward to it. Generally she has a different kind of wardrobe for the winter where she dresses in warm fur coats with boots and gloves. Although Mumbai does not see such a winter and Kriti has a different wardrobe for it in the city. Recently Kriti visited Delhi for an initiative and was much supported by her friends.

Kriti has been much appreciated for her debut film Heropanti, which was a super-hit and it got her performance noticed.

She will next be seen opposite Akshay Kumar and Shahid Kapoor in Singh is Bling and Farzi, respectively, and is currently prepping for her role, learning kick boxing and some dance styles too.

For a social cause

Imran Khan inaugurated the Indian Merchants Chamber Let’s look East: Embracing the Eastern Portlands Exhibition at Rampart Gallery, Kala Ghoda. The actor extended his support to the Mumbai Portland Revival Plan and voiced his opinions for the youth to recognise the importance of preserving the Portlands.

Lame humour

The poster of Action Jackson The Ajay Devgn-starrer releases on December 5. We can tell you that the promos look very lame and the humour is insipid with a lot of double meaning. Is it a family entertainer? We see only Sonakshi Sinha in the promos so where is Yaami Gautam? Also, Manasvi Mamgai is the hot new model-turned-actress, so what better does she have to do than play the hot chick in tiny clothes? Seriously, there is a limit to mindlessness and clichés too.

Change of time

The much-acclaimed Indian indepenedent flick Sulemani Keeda which is about two people who want to break into Bollywood as writers, will release on December 5. It was supposed to release on November 28. The film premiered at the MAMI Festival last year and has travelled worldwide.

Haider meets Hamlet

Shahid Kapoor, who had been busy shooting for Shaandar in London, delayed his return by a day as he wanted to visit British Museum in London. In one of their sections of the British Museum called Quotro they have the originals of the first edition of Hamlet. Shahid was extremely eager to go and have a look at the copy.

He has lived the role of Hamlet and was applauded for his role as Hamlet in Haider. The ace actor has been reading up a lot on Shakespeare and his plays, and has been taking a keen interest in that genre of drama.

It was the first time ever that he has played such an intense grey and moving performance.

A grand celebration

Rajat Sharma
good going: Rajat Sharma

From the power corridors of Delhi to the glamorous Mumbai, there is a most definite flutter over the news of a mega event being hosted by India TV to celebrate the 21 glorious years of India’s longest running television show Aap Ki Adalat with Rajat Sharma.

To commemorate the milestone for the show, India TV will organise a dazzling event. The country's top most leaders, including the President and the Prime Minister, celebrated Bollywood stars, including the three Khans; sports icons, including top cricketers, top business leaders, spiritual gurus as well as top bureaucrats will, for the first time, come together under one roof.

In the Indian electronic media industry, the names Rajat Sharma and Aap Ki Adalat have been synonymous since 1993, when the first show was telecast. It has broken all possible records in the history of Indian news television, and still continues to dominate the rating charts. In the last two decades, the show has featured almost all top names of their times.

During the celebrations, most of the personalities who featured in Aap Ki Adalat are expected to be seen. India’s Premier GEC Star Plus has also decided to be part of the celebrations and the event will be simulcast on both the channels — India TV and Star Plus on December 7 at 10 pm. Cineyug, one of India’s premier event management companies, will be managing the evening.

Farida gets candid

Farida Jalal, who has essayed various roles on the small screen over the years, is all set to play Dadi maa once again. The 65-year-old actress will be seen in Zee TV's upcoming show Satrangi Sasural. She says shows during her heydays were backed by stronger scripts. She feels that the content on Indian television lacks originality. And we completely agree!

Time to bid farewell

If the latest buzz is anything to go by, the show Ek Veer Ki Ardaas...Veera is expected to go off air or be pushed to another time slot. According to sources, the show has failed to garner good ratings in the past few months. Kapil Nirmal, who plays Nihal Singh in the show, is also quitting. There is also speculation that Masterchef India will take its place.

DD National rocks

Leaving behind the top general entertainment channels, Doordarshan National has surprisingly jumped to number one position in all Hindi GECs during the afternoon hours, 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, during the weekdays. DD National had an average 448 thousands viewership in average last twelve weeks (Wk 35’14- Wk 46’14) in all 4+TG. As reported by TAM, Doordarshan National was at the top with 448 GVTs followed by Star Plus with 436 GVTs and Life OK with 391 GVTs. Halla Bol set for return

Bindass is all set to return with the award-winning series Halla Bol. After inspiring Indian youth in its first season, the channel will continue to empower women with the second edition. This season will feature inspiring stories of women who believed in their dreams and chose to follow their passions.

Through the course of 26 episodes, Halla Bol 2 will explore the trials and tribulations of women, and illustrate how strength, belief and self-confidence go a long way. This season will showcase relevant issues such as women empowerment, gender inequality, family and social stereotypes, and feature stories of women who have made their mark in a ‘man’s world’. The stories will be inspiring — from a young girl wanting to pursue a male-dominated sport like boxing, to a pregnant woman who dared to walk out of an abusive marriage.

Reprising his role as the host, popular television personality Karan Tacker will take audiences through the inspiring journeys of the women heroes. “I am extremely proud to be a part of a show that inspires women to stand up for their rights. The response to the first season was truly heart-warming, and I am confident that viewers will love the second season as well,” he said.

The show will begin on Sunday, November 30, at 6.00 pm.
