Four injured in group clash

Four persons were injured in a clash between two groups of Trivedi Camp and Bhankharpur village here this morning.

The incident occurred at about 10 am when Karan Kumar and his nephews, Sahil and Sanjiv, were allegedly attacked by a group of seven to eight armed youths led by Ajay Kumar.

Karan and his nephews sustained injuries and were admitted to Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi.

Sources in the village said seeking revenge, some associates of Karan Kumar went to their rivals’ house this afternoon. Noticing them coming towards their house, the suspects climbed to the roof tops and hurled stones on the chasers thus causing injuries to some of them.

The incident created panic among the residents following which certain elderly persons of the village had to intervene to pacify the aggressive youths but to no avail, eyewitnesses recalled.

Gurjit Singh, station house officer, Dera Bassi, informed that the police had registered cross cases against both the parties on the complaints of Karan Kumar and Suraj Prakash.

The police have also arrested Ajay Kumar, Narinder, Suraj, Mukesh and Yudhvir on the complaint of Karan Kumar. Investigations are on.

Sexual exploitation case against Dera head
CBI court issues NBWs against key defence witness

In a sexual exploitation case with Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim as the accused, the CBI court issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against Tek Chand, a crucial defence witness, here today.

CBI counsel HPS Verma said several notices were sent to Sethi but he did not depose before the court.

Also, in the same case, the defence counsel today moved an application to examine four new witnesses, namely Gurdyal Singh, Sudesh, Mohan and Dharam Singh. However, it was dismissed after the CBI opposed it,” added Verma.

Meanwhile, in the Ranjit Singh murder case, the dera chief today filed a reply to the set of 449 questions given to him by the CBI. “In the reply, the accused stated that Ranjit Singh would arrange land for the dera and he was nowhere involved in the murder. The dera chief further stated in his reply that Ranjit was just his follower,” said CBI prosecutor HPS Verma.

The next date of hearing in the case has been scheduled for December 6.

Ranjit Singh, a member of the 10-member committee running the Dera affairs was murdered at his native Khanpur Kulian village on July 2002.

The deceased’s father had written to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in this regard. The High Court took notice of the letter and ordered a CBI probe into the incident.

CBI court seeks status report on complaint against UT cop

The CBI court today issued a notice to the investigating agency seeking a status report on a complaint lodged with it wherein a UT police Inspector was accused of cheating.

Harsimranjit Singh, a city resident, had filed a complaint against Inspector SPS Sondhi, the then in-charge of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the UT police.

In his complaint, Harsimranjit had alleged that a police team led by the Inspector arrested him in a case of cheating on March 19 last year and made him sign blank cheques.

Advocate Amar Singh Chahal said after Harsimranjit was released on bail, he found that Rs 12 lakh were withdrawn from his account by Jaswinder Singh. The latter was the complainant in the case registered against Harsimranjit. The amount withdrawn was allegedly shared between the police and Jaswinder Singh.

A complaint in this regard was given to the CBI on February 21. “Despite two legal notices, we did not get any response. So, we moved court seeking directions to get a status report on the complaint,” Chahal said.

Acting on the application, Additional District and Sessions Judge Vimal Kumar issued notice to the CBI. The court has given a week’s time to the CBI to file its reply in the matter.

Man gets life term

Panchkula, November 29
A local court today awarded life imprisonment to a man for murdering his pregnant wife. The accused Ram Kumar was convicted on Friday. On January 14, Ram Kumar had killed his wife Reena, who was eight months pregnant.

The couple had returned from Reena’s house and entered into a scuffle following which Ram hit his wife with an iron rod. Reena succumbed to her injuries but gave birth to a girl child before dying.

Kumar’s brother saw injured Reena and alerted his family following which she was taken to a hospital. Though the defence counsel had argued that Reena had died after she fell down from the first floor, the autopsy revealed that she died of head injuries.

Two hurt as bus, van collide

Chandigarh, November 29
Two persons were injured after a Haryana Roadways bus collided with a Tata Magic van at the Transport chowk light point in Sector 26 here this morning.

According to the police, the bus, driven by Suresh Kumar, hit the Tata Magic, driven by Sawraj Singh, a resident of Dera Bassi. The police got the information of the accident at around 7 am.

The police said the bus was going from Sector 26 to Panchkula when it hit the Tata Magic, which was on its way towards Bapu Dham Colony.

Two passengers travelling in the Tata Magic, identified as Kalu Ram and Ramesh, sustained injuries in the collision. They were rushed to the PGI. Their condition is said to be stable.

The police impounded both the vehicles. A case against the bus driver has been registered at the Sector 26 police station. He was arrested and released on bail later.

Juvenile held for theft

A juvenile domestic help was arrested for stealing cash, US currency and jewellery from the house of his employer in Sector 34. The court has sent him to the Juvenile Home.

The complainant, Harmanjot Singh, stated that the incident took place on Thursday night and the next day, he found the locker containing cash and gold ornaments open, and valuables missing. He claimed that the accused stole 2,000 US dollars, 100 pounds, Rs 4,500, four gold rings and four silver rings. A case was registered at the Sector 34 police station. The accused was arrested and stolen items recovered. He was produced in the local court on Saturday.

3 Burail residents booked for rape

A few months after a man was booked for allegedly raping a woman, his wife has accused the woman’s brothers of rape. The complainant alleged that the accused also stole Rs 50,000 in cash and jewellery from her residence.

Police sources said while the two accused have been identified as Irfan and Irdish, the identity of the third accused is yet to be ascertained. All three are residents of Burail in Sector 45.

In her complaint to the police, the victim stated that the incident took place on November 19. The accused entered her house while she, along with her daughter, was sleeping. The victim alleged that the accused threatened her with a sharp-edged weapon and raped her.

The victim’s medical examination was conducted at the GMCH, Sector 32.

A case has been registered at Sector 34 police station. However, no arrests have been made so far.

Meanwhile, a woman resident of Sector 44, Chandigarh, alleged that Vivek Gupta, a resident of Sector 32, threatened and misbehaved with her in the Sector 46 market. A case has been registered at the Sector 34 police station. The accused was arrested and released on bail later.

Athletics Cub-7 corner glory

Spikers of Athletics Club, Sector 7, defeated DAV School, Sector 8, in straight sets, to lift the title of Chandigarh State Volleyball Championship for boys (junior), held at the Sports Complex of Sector 7. The title winners posted back to back win 25-17, 25-21 and 25-22 to claim the trophy.

The winning side dominated the proceeding right from the word go and won the first set conveniently. In the second set DAV-8 tried to make a comeback but failed in their effort. While in the third set, the winning side continued their performance and won the title. Sahil and Sagar of Athletics Club exhibited excellent game while for losing side Subham performed well.

In the final of girls (junior) category, Sports Complex, Sector 42, defeated Sports Complex, Sector 46, 3-0 ( 25-11, 25-16 and 25-18). For winning side Sumedha and Vaisali displayed extraordinary game while for losing side Bhawna and Poonam showed some resistance. In both categories team of Sports Complex, Sector 46, attained third place.

In the final of sub-junior girl’s category, Sports Complex, Sector 42, lifted the trophy by defeating Sports Complex, Sector 46 3-0 (25-22,25-23 and 25-20).

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, defeated Sports Complex, Sector 46, (B team) 3-1( 25-20,25-19, 22-25, 25-23). In the final match of the boys category, YFC Club, Sector 27, posted a 3-0 win over DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

SGGS-26 log win in basketball

Cagers of SGGS Collegiate Public School, Sector 26, beat Guru Harkrishan School, Sector 38, 63-38, during a match of the ongoing Rao Jai Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament. The winning side claimed the first quarter 9-4 while in the second set extended the lead before claiming the quarter 23-24. In the last two quarters, the team continued to score baskets before claiming it at 16-06 and 15-12, respectively. For winning side, Harjeet gathered 24 points while Devansh contributed 17 points for losing side.

In the second match, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, outclassed Kimberley International, Barwala, 71-37. The winning side posted a win in all four quarters at 18-12, 16-07, 19-10 and 18-08. Aman Tyagi ensured his team’s win with 44 points while for losing side Rahul with a contribution of 23 points reduced the margin.

In the matches of girl’s category, Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, defeated The New Public School, 24-12.

In the second match, Vivek High School, Sector 38, defeated Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, 22-13. In another closely contested match, the winning side won the first two quarters at 08-02 and 08-03 while played one draw at 04-04 and lost another at 02-04. For winning side Pinki gathered 5 points.

St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, beat Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, 11-06 (05-00,02-00,04-02 and 00-04) with Manjot ( 6 points) gathering most points. For losing side Harpreet reduced the margin with collecting 04 points. In the last game, Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, beat Chakwal National School, Kurali, 35-04 (12-00,04-00,10-02 and 09-02). Aman collected 10 points for winning side.
