Marry go round
The sanctity of marriages may have declined but the weddings have definitely redefined. It doesn’t get infinite than wedding ideas and each season brings along a lot of changes, some sudden, some subtle. Unless vintage is in vogue, classic is for a reason or old-world charm makes for a theme, it is not cool to be left behind. A brief glance at the latest in weddings. It starts with the platter Strolling chef stations, elaborate cheese platters, bourbon bars, and of course the Nouvelle cuisine. Food is meant to appeal the platter as much as the palette. Shares Gursimran Walia, director, Commando Caterers, “Apart from the regular cuisines we have been seeing at weddings in the past; there is Mediterranean cuisine that is quite a novelty at weddings these days. Fusion food is getting big too. For example continental food made in Indian gravies. But it is all customised as per the stipulations.” He adds, “Then there’s low calorie food, where all the low calorie food is prepared live with different condiments, spices as per the tastes of the guests.” Inside—outside, literally Divine intervention at match-making is one thing, divine interruption quite another. No one would really want rain, nature, winds to play havoc to decor that’s been arranged on the exteriors of a resort. “Wedding décor has primarily evolved because of summer and monsoon weddings that invariably happen indoors. So far there was always a misconception that one cannot recreate the ambience of an outdoor function but that’s not the case anymore. Indoor décor has not only managed to replicate exteriors but even better it sometimes,” shares Tarika Dhiman, designer, Wishful Thinking, a Delhi-based wedding planning firm. Further, blame it on the unpredictable weather and very many like to take chances with indoor functions. Blame it on the increasingly unpredictable weather or summer weddings, the décor goes indoors just as if it were outside. Music makes the marriage There’s the DJ, that’s been there. Someone who has been and will be. Only not every time, there’s a pre-wedding or a post wedding gathering. How about a traditional ladies troupe, a dhol night or a shehnai? Weddings are not just about Honey Singh and the DJ. It’s a motion picture It does matter what the wedding was like. Or, it doesn’t matter what it was like. A decade down the line, it will be remembered exactly as how it is captured in the frames. Wedding albums are a big business and those in the industry will do all it takes to ensure that a wedding remains an affair well remembered. “We are absolutely done with the days when camerapersons would stop the bride and groom asking them to pose or what to do. Gone are also the days of artificial lighting being used at weddings. Good quality cameras make it possible to capture candid shots all through the weddings. Our only brief to the bride and groom is to be yourself on the wedding day,” shares Sunny Sheoran, creative director, Deepika’s Deep Clicks. Then there’s a major haul over in what we have so far called weddings albums. He adds, “Now-a-days we highlight wedding stories. Each wedding is like a complete film. It starts with bytes wherein the bride and groom are introduced, then the story is taken forward. It is a film where we even film the behind the scenes shots on the wedding day.” As for the budgets? “For eight days of functions, it can easily shoot up to Rs 6.5 lakh. It is certainly not in thousands anymore. It is in lakhs.” It is about time that Bollywood started influencing weddings in newer ways. manpriya@tribunemail.com

It’s time to jazz up
Often City Beautiful has been called ‘intellectually impotent’, especially after the disappointing turnout at several cultural events held of late. However, with the announcement of the first-ever Chandigarh Jazz Festival, the movement that identifies with the thinking man’s music, indicates a certain degree of improvement.
At the Whistling Duck, Sector 26, we stand acquainted with a brand new proposition that shall determine the cultural taste of the city folks, especially when it comes to music and whether it’s gone beyond the acoustic covers of Bollywood songs sung in the name of Sufi music. Slated to begin on December 7, the three-day-long Chandigarh Jazz festival will take place at the Whistling Duck, and will feature city band, Combo #3 along with several national and international jazz music bands, including Tarun Balani Collective, Kitchensink and Shadow and Light among many others. In conversation with the organisers, Nippun Cheema and Ambar Mehrotra, we get a little peak into the event. The first of the concerns that they address to is the reason behind organising a jazz festival. “One way to go about things is to follow the trend, and the other way of being is to make a difference with the belief and conviction on your side. The Chandigarh Jazz Festival is a product of our faith and belief,” begins Ambar, the owner of Whistling Duck, as he talks about his restaurant’s association with the promotion of art and culture through story telling sessions, live Indi music (rock and pop) and several exhibitions. Meanwhile, Nippun Cheema, Chandigarh-based musician and promoter of the event, shares that his intention to start a jazz festival in the city stems from an urge to introduce the city folks to alternative music. “Jazz is all about improvisation and experimentation, be it with vocals or instruments or even poetry for that matter,” shares Nippun of the band Combo #3. “Also, one of the days we will be performing a music set with poetry, where we will be improvising on the poetry written by the city folks, most of which I picked from blogs,” he adds. The festival will feature neo-classical and contemporary jazz forms, including impressionist jazz. All the musicians performing at the festival have a record on the i-tunes to their merit and most of them have already been featured in projects like Coke Studio. “We have a very seasoned set of musicians, especially Tarun Balani, who is presently performing at the Goa Jazz Festival and Kitchensink too,” says Cheema. Though it has been more than four years that the city slipped into the Sufi Night zone that is usually not Sufi at all, (even when it comes to the music), the Herculean task of engaging the masses into jazz hangs heavy on the organisers, but they seem quite confident about the venture. “I look at Chandigarh as a world city, with its French architecture and I think people would like to listen to some good music that is made available to them,” says Cheema. The bands performing at the festival are Tarun Balani Collective, Kitchensink, Takatrio, Sava Boyadzhiev Quartet, Mr Manual Manuel, Ronojit Chaliha, Rohit Gupta Trio, Combo #3 and Shadow and Light. Entry ticket for three days costs Rs 1,000 and for each day (separately) it costs Rs 500. The festival begins on Dec 7, from 7pm to 10pm.

punjabi
scope Jasmine Singh Alright, this is a one big party and everyone is invited. Like all other ‘parties’, this one too doesn’t have any rules and regulations. You can do whatever you want; you can turn wherever you like without giving any signal. Welcome to the world of Punjabi film Proper Patola, starring a fine actor, Harish Verma, an equally fine actress, Neeru Bajwa and another handsome actor Yuvraj Hans. This is the main cast of the party, while in the organising list is the director, Harish Vyas, writer and co-director Amit Saxena, among others. So, this is how the party called Proper Patola begins. The director introduces his main cast and other members within the first 5-10 minutes and then disowns them. Half-an-hour down the line, with two songs already done with, all the actors are doing is…what they feel like! Well, no, they are actually acting according to a script that revolves majorly around the issue of honeymoon and around the mistaken identity of two sisters! The script of the film has such big holes that if you fall once, you only need a Harish Verma, perky Neeru Bajwa, some romantic songs and a Yuvraj Hans to pull you out, but looking at this film this also becomes doubtful. The director, Harish Vyas, has probably lost the plot somewhere, and the story is marred with some unbelievable chapters. Most of the scenes are unjustified, creative licence in understandable but nonsense isn’t! The dialogues of Proper Patola shriek of immaturity, like someone wrote it sleep-walking. The plot is, however, new, but the director has made every effort to destroy it. For once you want to walk out to the movie hall just to check the poster of the film, simply to ensure whether they have actually written Harish Verma and Yuvraj Hans’ name on it! We see Harish Verma playing Raj, but it is largely Neeru Bajwa who is hogging the screen. In fact, the actors playing Neeru Bajwa’s sister-in-law and brother-in-law have more screen space than the lead actors. In all this, the director almost forgot Yuvraj Hans. This is one handsome actor who can do a romantic role and also comedy, but the director has no idea about it. Neeru Bajwa is looking beautiful and sounding screechy at the same time. Harish Verma; we can only say it is a crime to waste this fine actor. Before we head towards the end, we would want the director to tell us about one fauji who doesn’t let his kids be, who doesn’t allow cellphones at home, a fauji who thinks a newly married couple shouldn’t go for a honeymoon after marriage! Proper Patola has some good songs from Jassi Katyal and Saurabh Kalsi, who have done the music. Rest, feel free to walk into this party and walk out of it, anytime, after all this party doesn’t have any rules. jasmine@tribunemail.com |

first-day-first show
Zed Plus Nice concept This is perhaps one of the finest films on the political set-up of India, which touches upon the life of a common man. I think that this film has a brilliant concept and it has also been treated very well. Charul Sharma, student Brilliant film It’s a brilliant film and what I love the most about it is the manner in which the makers decided to make an uncommon story on a common man. Also, I really like the realistic set-up in which the film is shot. The actors are superb. Banipreet Kaur, student Must watch After a long time, I saw a film that leaves you with a thought. It’s a beautiful film with a brilliant story and it’s a must watch! Harneet Kaur, student

Ungli However, the Police Commissioner is pressurised by the Chief Minister and the Government to put an end to these vigilantes who have taken the law into their own hands. ACP Kale takes on the case and begins to track down Ungli Gang. Waste of time Even though the film features actors who have delivered good performance in the last few movies they have done, there is something wrong about this film. Namrita Sehgal, student Okay affair It’s a so-so film. It touches upon subjects that are hard-hitting, but there is nothing about it that hangs these concerns on meaningful perspectives. They could have done a lot better. Ankita Singh, student (As told to Amarjot Kaur)

star track Emraan Hashmi has not had a hit film in a while and even Raja Natwarlal flopped. He has stopped wearing his gemstone rings. We tell you about the superstitious beliefs or lack of them that other actors have
Stone age He has his quirky beliefs. He doesn’t watch live matches because he believes it leads to India losing the match. He wears two watches and carries three cellphones. He also wears gemstone rings.
Howling horror She doesn’t like the sound of howling dogs. She doesn’t believe in wearing rings and stones and doesn’t believe that they can make or break our luck. The Lunchbox worked without wearing any stones.
Hand full He loves his turquoise bracelet talisman and it has become a rage because of him. He even wears it in his films. His success and magnanimity is for all to see. No wonder all his fans love his turquoise bracelet!
Off and on He is spiritual, not superstitious. His mom does pujas for him and gives him talismans. Tiger wore a taweez before shooting for Heropanti because they did so many daredevil stunts. It had fallen off and he never not put it back.
Guardian angel She is not superstitious at all. She doesn’t believe in such things. She thinks she is talented and hard-working and believes in herself. Kangna, however, believes in angels and that is a spiritual thing.
Sailing with glory
A leading UK daily partnered up with Ship of Theseus under their campaign - Guardian Cities in India. The team was keen to have an elaborate exchange with the makers of Ship of Theseus, director Anand Gandhi and producer and actor Sohum Shah and talk to them about the journey of the film. Anand Gandhi and Sohum Shah who are in the midst of a hectic shooting schedule for their next Tumbad, adjusted their dates to make time for this exchange. An enthusiastic team from the Guardian organised a screening of Ship of Theseus preceded by a lengthy discussion on the film and the state of Indian cinema. They felicitated Anand and Sohum for the brilliant film they have made. The team spoke to Anand and Sohum about the story of the film, the casting, the scale, and their entire journey of making the film at large. It is interesting the way Ship of Theseus has picked the interest of people across borders.
Less is more for Mona
Heavy work schedule is not something that is new to an actor, especially one with a television background. But Mona Singh has experienced so much of ‘promotion work’ in the last month that she is amazed at the amount of work one has to put into promotions of one’s movie.
“We started the promotions of Zed Plus in the last week of October and are still travelling,” reveals the actress who has (within the span of three weeks) along with the cast, made it to Bhopal, Jaipur, Pushkar, Ajmer Sharif, Ahmedabad, Baroda, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chandigarh and Haryana. “We have attended press conferences in all these places and what has amazed me the most is the warmth I have received from the journalists and the people,” smiles Mona. Throwing light on the hectic schedule, Mona says, “I’m enjoying the process a lot as this is the first time that I am a part of movie promotions. It’s not easy to take early morning flights every day, in and out of cities, but the process is so amazing that one forgets about being tired.” Ask her what was the one common question she was put forth by journalists all over, and the actress says, “Everywhere I went I was asked the same question unanimously; why am I so choosy about my work? I liked the fact that the media wants to see more of me.” For Mona, however, ‘Less is more’. “I don’t believe in quantity but quality of work. Years later, when I look back, I should be proud of the cinema I have been a part of,” she says.
Huma’s humanitarian act
Huma Qureshi distributes blankets every winter. Since she is born and brought up in Delhi, so she is sensitive to the fact that many people die in winter due to the harsh weather and sheer lack of warm clothes. Therefore she is making arrangements to help the destitute who are suffering due to lack of amenities.
Huma distributes 40-50 blankets to the under-privileged in Delhi every winter. Although she realises it’s not much, but it’s an attempt from her side. Huma consciously does her bit for society, be it distributing food or blankets, she makes an attempt. The actress has completed shooting for Badlapur along with Varun Dhawan.
A battle won
Vir Das had given himself a personal milestone and five years to do it. He has done it in two-and-a-half.
This Sunday show of Battle of the Sexes is very special for Vir Das as it sees him reach the half million ticket mark across all his shows. This feat has catapulted him to the position of being the largest selling Indian comedy performer. This feat was made possible through the stupendous response all his shows have garnered from audiences across the country, including but not restricted to History of India, Battle of the Sexes, Alien Chutney, Vir Das’s Resentury, etc. Talking about the same, an ecstatic Vir Das said, “It’s just crazy to get here this fast, I would like to thank the audiences and fans for the same.” He further said, “Three years ago I had given myself a mandate that in the next five years I should sell half a million tickets and I started keeping track. Now, two-and-half year after I started aggressively perusing this goal, I still had to sell 290 tickets to attain this feat, which I did with the quantum of tickets sold for Battle of the Sexes last Saturday.” “Now, I want to see how fast I can reach a million, it’s this cool phase where the films and the comedy crowds have all blended together.” The talented actor is constantly juggling between films and live shows. The actor is quiet excited about 2015 as he has around 4-5 mainstream Hindi language feature films slated for release next year. It will also be an important year for Vir as all his characters he essays in these films would be unique.
Cold treatment
Sidharth Malhortra has an ice bath every morning. The actor has been working out for his new movie Brothers in which he will be essaying the role of a fighter for which he has been on a strenuous workout regime.
He has been gymming and practicing mixed martial arts and dedicates three to four hours a day for training. So it’s necessary for him to take an ice bath every day. The ice bath helps his muscles repair faster. It is a technique athletes and gymnasts use for recovery. He has to dip himself in ice water for 8-10 minutes every day. Initially when Sidharth started this process it was very tough for him, however, he is now getting accustomed to his cold water showers. As an actor Sidharth has always tried new things and pushed the envelope. ice ice baby: Sidharth Malhortra

A very worthy performance, indeed
Actor Ankur Verma, who hails from Haryana, recently delivered a 14-minute long emotional scene in his show Suhani Si Ek Ladki.
And this scene got a great response from the audience with skyrocketing TRPs. Ankur shares, “Krishna who is married to Soumya in the show recently had an emotional outburst, and for that I had to enact the scene very convincingly. When I reached the set I got the dialogues on the spot and there was no time for preparation.” He adds, I gave my best and after my performance, the whole cast and crew clapped for me. It was a single shot with multiple cameras and the whole focus was on me so I was a little nervous, but in the end I nailed it.” Indeed a very worthy performance!
End of the road
Television show Khushiyon Kii Gullak Aashi, which was launched with a new concept about foster parents, is reportedly going off air. The show, which star Helly Shah, Nishigandha Wad, Rohitash and Naman Shaw, has apparently failed to generate curiosity among the viewers. However, the details about its last episode have not been disclosed.
Ronit denies rumours
One of America’s most loved sitcoms will be turned into a desi affair. Star Plus is bringing Everybody Loves Raymond to India, in a Hindi avatar. While the project is being kept under wraps, buzz is that actor Ronit Roy has been approached to play the title role. However, Ronit denied the news and wrote: “To set the record straight, me doing adaptation of Everybody loves Raymond news is false and mere speculation.” Sources inform us that some of television’s top-notch names have been already signed up, but we will wait to confirm.
