Chhat Bir, November 20
A female Asiatic black bear died at the Mahendra Chaudhary Zoological Park, popular as Chhat Bir zoo, here in the wee hours today.

Brought from a Tripura zoo in 2006, the 16-year-old bear died in 15 hours after the zoo authorities found her suffering from a pulmonary disease. The average life of a bear in captivity is 25 to 30 years.

Frequent deaths of zoo inmates have brought the functioning of the zoo management under a scanner. With the female bear’s death, eyebrows are being raised over the arrangements for the zoo inmates for winters.

Manish Kumar, field director of the zoo, claimed that the zookeeper found the animal uncomfortable on Wednesday evening, following which the veterinary staff was put on duty. After preliminary medication, the bear was kept under observation. The animal responded well and even took feed in the evening, Kumar claimed.

“The animal was found motionless at about 6 am,” he claimed.

The carcass was disposed of after a post-mortem examination at the zoo premises this afternoon. “We have sent samples to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareli, to ascertain the exact cause of death,” he claimed.
