Illegal mining goes unchecked
Kakrali (Dera Bassi), Nov 16 The politically well-connected sand mafia is allegedly quarrying and violating the specifications right under the nose of the authorities. Ironically, the mining is going on just 10 km away from the home town of NK Sharma, chief parliamentary secretary (Industries and Commerce), Punjab. Moreover, the site is hardly 5 km away from the office of Anil Sharma, SP, Dera Bassi. Sources in the village revealed that the mafia in connivance with local farmers have been excavating soil and gravel from fragile agricultural land, sharing their boundaries with the site reportedly, auctioned by the department for querying. Squadron leader (Retd) Gulzar Singh, who owns land in the village, complained that the sand mafia has been active in the area for the past many years and has virtually ruined the ecology of the area. Sand mafia use heavy machinery at the site for excavation. The excavation is going on round-the-clock and the mafia men had dug up almost 30 feet deep trenches adjacent to his agriculture land, Singh complained. Heavy vehicles are being used to transport the loose soil, sand and gravel which has badly damaged the road linking the villages, he lamented. Darshan Singh and other farmers of the areas apprehending that the razing Ghaggar will wash away their farm lands during rains as the mafia has lifted sand and gravel from the site bringing down its level. The kucha road leading to the fields has been damaged badly and dust has started destroying the crops, said Gulzal Singh. He said mafia expedited the excavation after Manmohan Singh Walia, mining officer paid a visit to the site on his request last month. A visit by The Tribune team to the site found nearly six heavy duty earth excavators digging the fertile soils almost 500 yards away from the Ghaggar bed. The excavation (almost 25 feet deep) was also going on amid farm lands. Tippers, loaded with soil, sand and gravel, were being plied on a makeshift road connecting the site with the Old Ambala-Shimla highway via Mubarikpur-Ramgarh across the Ghaggar. |
