Unconditional surrender
The monumental statue Unconditional Surrender by US artist Seward Johnson, at Caen. The statue, inspired by the famous photograph made by US photographer Alfred Eisensteadt in New York’s Times Square in 1945 at the end of WW II, has been creating controversy since it appeared that the kiss might have been the result of a forceful action, and the French feminist association “Osez le feminism” (Dare Feminism), considering it as the representation of a sexual assault, denounced it as an inappropriate symbol for freedom and launched a petition for the statue to be removed.
